I have been seeing a lot of designs that dont work technicaly. Many are too detailed, others dont make sense as a shirt. Im sure i wont make any new friends here, but i am trying to help with a critical eye all those who seem so excited about their art work.

No offence, but "understand the medium in which you design for" is pretty appalling grammar.

"Understand the medium in which you design" maybe?

besides the obvious and already pointed out problems with the above posted blog, the point of this website is to give more creative freedom to the masses. As long as it can be printed, I don't mind seeing it as a submission.

How is posting this blog helping "with a critical eye all those who seem so excited about their art work"?
If they want to submit it, let them. If you don't like it, give it a 0. It's that simple.

If you don't like it, give it a 0.

No no no. This is not how you evaluate the designs in which you score for!
Seriously, even designs I hate don't get zeros from me if they aren't total crap.

Designing is alot harder than it may look to your "critical eyes". When I see designs of your's I will hold your technical critique in higher value.

iDanSimpson on May 23 '07 at 4:37pm
"Understand the medium in which you design" maybe?

actually, i think the best way to put it would be:

"Understand the medium for which you design"

you aren't designing inside of a medium, instead, one is designing for a specific medium. i like talking about grammar, so please feel free to correct me if i'm mistaken.

understanding is the medium for what your designing of.
WanderingBert

Understanding that people won't respect your "artistic guidance" until you've proven your design ability is also very important. As Travioli alluded to.

and I prefer "Understand the medium for which you design" personally, just coz that seems to be the real conversation here.

iDanSimpson - You may be right. Despite having an English degree, some grammatical rules still confuse me.

I was thinking, though, that a designer works "in" a medium, not for it. Picasso worked in the medium of paint, Michaelangelo in the medium of stone, and Van Halen in the medium of ROCK.

haha

Anyway. Yeah, that's why I put "in". LIke I said though, I might be wrong.

13strong, i think you are actually right.

it's really easy for me to think in circles, especially in regards to grammar, and come to the wrong conclusion.

design you the medium in which you understand for
chelly
chelly on May 24 '07 at 9:05am
i think the point is partially valid. some of the newer designers, in particular, take art from another medium and apply it to a tee and it just looks like crap. regardless, i think that it is something that an artist has to learn through trial and error.
tesco
   tesco on May 24 '07 at 10:27am
the point is completely valid, but would be better made with some examples. most of the designs here look like shit on a shirt, to my tastes anyway (ie: far too detailed, perspective, one time funny jokes etc etc)

Hahaha!! This is why I love you guys... your comments are too funny.

traitsnick brings up an interesting point, but without going into specific detail he could be right or he could be wrong. However, to some extent, I disagree on some points... I think you CAN be very detailed as long as you are aware of the fact that when you pull back from the design it still has to look good. Then it looks good from far away, and you're rewarded with more things to discover when you're closer.

I've been told on almost all of my subs that my design doesn't work for a t-shirt.
Tonteau
   Tonteau on May 24 '07 at 10:48am
I think it depends to a very large extent what people want to wear on a T-Shirt.

I wouldn't wear a lot of what gets printed at threadless, quite a lot of it I don't think works well on a shirt, but plenty of people love the designs, hence their printage. And on the other hand, there are loads of designs I love which threadless will never print because not enough people like them. It comes down to perception, essentially.

It's a valid point, certainly. But the bottom line is that there will always be subs which just completely miss the mark and the people who really need to be told this, probably aren't reading this blog.
