I didn't like The Rum Diary, but haven't read the latter novel.

The other 2 aren't as good but worth reading.

It's just the whole American Dream, unrealized thing. Requiem for a Dream is like that, but with more health problems.

i can't make a recommendation b/c i haven't read either of those, but i just started reading kafka on the shore by haruki murakami and it's pretty interesting so far.
