thee silver mt zion memorial orchestra and tra-la-la band sang so loudly that by the end none of them were using their microphones. every member of the band sang, too--i think there were nine at that show. (there were guests.) they ended the show with a song called "blindblindblind", and the last four minutes of that are them all yell-singing the phrase 'some hearts are true' in interlocking rhythms. The last two minutes they stopped playing their instruments and just sang, all nine of them, and when they all quieted simultaneously everyone just stood there for a minute before clapping. The most amazing band ever.

also, explosions in the sky were pretty amazing.

Yeah, the GITD Tour was amazing man. I even liked Rihana's set, she played a medley of other peeps songs in the middle of the show and one was MIA's Paper Planes!

also, like or dislike Kanye West, that show was Michael Jackson-sized spectacle. The whole back wall of the gigantic stage was a screen depicting kanye on a spaceship crash landing on earth, a HAL-like screen kept coming up and down from the top of the stage to talk to him, swirling stars came out from time to time, fire erupting everywhere, and at the end a platform came out of the stage with lights and smoke everywhere like Close Encounters of the third kind with Kanye floating away. Plus, he somehow connected all the songs in the show to this theme, and had Rihana sing "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey halfway through!

hmmm, the best show might be close. Ratatat was a sweet show, but I would have to say Shiny Toy Guns, Jonezetta, and MuteMath, was the best show ever. I've seen mutemath about 4 times now, once with circa survive and mae, which was incredible, but I was front and center with the other one, and it was just loads of fun.

oh, i used to love a silver mt. zion! i mean, i still do, but i haven't really listened to them in forever. i have their "this is our punk rock" album.

i saw brian wilson during his SMiLE tour in... 2005? i think? and that was a really, really amazing concert. i think i was just dumbfounded that i was in the same room with such a musical legend.

i think the concerts i like best are ones with bands whom i've never heard of who end up really blowing me away.

@ Sonmi, another front runner for best show was octopus project with mount righteous and Cobralush. All three bands were really good, but the lead singer of Octopuc project reminds me alot of you.

Bear Vs Shark, in the lower level of some coffee shop in Madison.

ZOMG fucking amazing. There was no stage, so the band just played on floor level, and the singer was nuts and just kept on hanging on everyone in the crowd. Not to mention there was barely anyone there. Also... it was one of their last shows before they broke up :(

hopefully this video does them playing live justice... as i cant hear sound at work

I want to see Bear vs Shark live! I don't really listen to anybody else that sounds like them, but they are awesome.

Sonmi, if you haven't listened to them in awhile, pick up "Horses in the Sky". It's only got six songs on it, and the last three are so-so, but I've been obsessed with the first three since high school. Their other newer stuff is pretty good too. Pretty Lightning Paw EP and 13 Blues for 13 Moons. I've got the vinyl version of the latter and no record player to listen to it on. : (

Also, I just read a book with a character named Sonmi in it.

They Might Be Giants about a million years ago. Soul Coughing opened and had either just, or not yet released Ruby Vroom. TMBG started a congo line at one point. it was magical.

rolf- octopus project is the band with the theremin, right? if so, i saw them open for enon a while back! they were fun.

stefan- thanks for the recommendation! the only medium i own of theirs is a record, but luckily we have a player that sort of works. and i bet you're reading cloud atlas... i've been meaning to pick that up.

another very memorable show was back in fall 2002, my first time seeing sigur ros... before all their albums started sounding the same (sans the new one, i guess?). i was right against the stage, and took this pic of jonsi!

It was Cloud Atlas! But it isn't so great. I mean, it's written really well, but it's basically just short stories with a gimmick.

Daft Punk with The Rapture, SebastiAn, and Kavinsky live at Keyspan Park in August 07. Everything about that concert and day was perfect.

#2: Justice live at a 9:30 club

The crowd was freaking insane, and I got really bruised, but other than that this concert was up to par.

Front and center for both concerts!
