OK, so I've heard a lot of designers on here talking about Illustrator and LiveTrace. I've no idea what either of these programmes are. Where do I get them? Are they freeware/shareware/hideously expensive software? Which is better? I've got Photoshop, is that OK instead? Or does Illustrator have special powers I need?

Thanks for any help :)

Photoshop = Rasters and pixels
Illustrator = Vectors and points

Raster = lossy
Vector = lossless

Photoshop to edit photos.
Illustrator to illustrate.

In laymens terms, if you draw using vectors, which can be done in PS but can be done better in Illustrator, you can enlarge it as much as you want without losing quality.

With raster images, such as things scanned into Photoshop, you have to design at least as big as you want the actual print to be.

education version doesn't have any restrictions... none that I've found anyway and I use a non-education at work. Still expense for a student.

So essentially Photoshop is OK to use but will just be more difficult to create images in? Gutted, everyone here seems to have Illustrator so I hoped it might be easier to pick up than that.

I'd say master the pen tool in photoshop first before you buy illustrator or else, you might get a little frustrated.

I rarely use the pen tool.

Freehand pencil or brush rulez.

If you have a tablet.
