OK, I'm sure no one is on at the moment but I'll probably bump this in the morning because I could probably do with the advice.

My middle sister's 21st birthday is about three weeks away and given that she's currently a poor Uni student and a lot of her friends are going to travel about 300kms (185M) to be there I've offered to take care of catering for the thing.

In short I'll be taking care of a barbecue for dinner serving something like 20 people and breakfast (probably more likely brunch) for around ten.

At the moment my plan is as follows:

Dinner

honey soy chicken wings
barbecue pork ribs
shish (lamb) kebabs with a lemon and rosemary marinade
beef bulgogi
avocado and mango salad with passion fruit vinaigrette
Greek salad
either coleslaw or a potato salad (if the latter probably new potatoes with a mint and parsley dressing)

I'll also barbecue some onion, potato disks (if I don't do a potato salad) and maybe some sausages. I'll probably serve some kind of hot flat bread too.

Breakfast

Given the number of people I think I'll probably barbecue again, I'm thinking:

bacon
chorizo
eggs
tomato
mushroom
spinach
hash browns
chicken (maybe)

I'll accompany it with orange juice, coffee and (for the kids who aren't driving) champagne. If I'm feeling particularly adventurous I'll do some fruit salad.

Any thoughts? Do you have any ideas about how I can improve this? Wicked barbecue type recipes you can send my way? Is there anything I've overlooked?

Thanks in anticipation.

Good call SJ though I don't really do desserts, I might have a word with Al's housemate and see if she feels like taking care of that part of the evening.

HASH BROWNS!
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Mar 11 '09 at 6:45am
But you make muffins! Someone needs to be in charge of cake atleast. And that's simple because you prepare it beforehand.

Neon Samurai on Mar 11 '09 at 7:02am
SJ: Yeah, I make muffins, but they're the only baking I really do and (in my head at least) they're breakfast food rather than baked goods.

I can do all things breakfast.

I may have to bake a cake as well.

It's all kind of complicated by the fact that I'll probably only get into town the night before which is why I've gone with stuff that will cook well with 24 hours marinading.

Kat-ii: Hash browns are a good call, I'll do some of those too.

Your list makes me want to come by. Even though I am actually a vegetarian.

hot damn, I hope you find someone to press into sous-chefery.

when my old pals descend on my folks' summer house, Mom makes an assload of french toast for us the morning we all leave. it's stellar for a crowd, if they're into sweet breakfasts. also, if you bake some muffins or coffee bread a day or two before, that might help you in the morning if you're looking at serving some big eaters.

my big barbeque recipe involves a slow-cooker, so I doubt you'd be interested. what kind of cake does she like, in case you have to take care of that?

menu looks great as-is, btw.

except, ps, grill some pineapple. nom.

Colorfool: Good point, I don't think there'll be any vegetarians there but you never know, I guess I should BBQ some mushrooms with dinner too in case.

Any other thoughts from vegetarian peoples?

Beth: Yeah Beth, I'll think about French toast, I suppose I could bake muffins the day before and serve them up too (I don't know any coffee bread recipes). Thoughts on type?

No idea on the cake front, I'm not really a baker, shall find out and come back.

You thinking fresh pineapple cut into disks and brushed with lemon juice and brown sugar?

guh. I think I was trying to say "coffee cake" and "tea bread" at the same time. damn time changes. *yawn*

for muffins, I guess I'd recommend any nut-free recipe with which you're confident, unless your sister can give you a definite "no" about whether anyone has nut allergies. I'll have a look in my recipe box, too.

I find that balsamic vinegar and olive oil is the most amazing thing to serve with a platter of bread at a barbeque. Bread is good, cause it fills people up :)

Beth: Thanks, you're a star.

Kerry: It shouldn't be that bad, I mean, there's a fair bit of preparation but I can do all of that the night/morning before but the cooking is actually pretty quick and dirty.

PS: Threadless just accepted my product pic so I'll get that hoody out to you now, postage is a little more than I expected though so it may have to wait until I get paid.

Kimby: Good call, I'll serve some of that up with my flat bread.

hey Neon! I've had the caricature of Sillibanana's daughter up for several days but I don't think she's seen it. Also emailed it to her but didn't hear back. If you talk to her, let her know it's up! I think she's really hard to reach. It also took me awhile to get the drawing completed, but I'm hoping she sees it! I asked for her address to mail her the original too. Maybe she doesn't go on Threadless much. I don't go on as often as before.

21sts are kind of a big deal over here and she's a student and she's got a bunch of new uni friends.

Just trying to pitch in.

Now all I need to do is convince my work to give me the friday off. . .

that sounds amazing

definitely grill up some pineapple... are you putting vegetables and such on the kebabs? another way to cover the vegetarian possibility and add to that, just grill up some carrots and onions and squash and such.

any stuff you can reuse for breakfast from the dinner to cut down on the work?
Neon Samurai
Neon Samurai on Mar 12 '09 at 5:58pm
Becca: Yeah, I''l be putting capsicum and onion on the kebabs.

Not really anything I can reuse (though slicing mushrooms is slicing mushrooms).

To be honest there's not that much work there, theres a fair bit of prep but nothing complicated and I arrive the evening before so I've got plenty of time.
