OK, so today I came to the conclusion that I'm pudgy. I could loose a few pounds. I've decided to stop drinking soda and eating pasta (read: mac and cheese).

Does anyone have any really good diets they've been on? Not some crazy-assed crash weight loss plan, but something that really worked and was not completely horrible while doing it? I'm starting a workout schedule this week, I'd appreciate the tips. Thanks!

Yep, don't follow any 'diets'!

Just get regular exercise and eat healthy and regularly. And don't overdo the exercise, as that'll make you give in quicker. Find something you enjoy, and you'll stick to it.

And good luck.

Everything in moderation is the key. A good combination of balanced diet, regular exercise( cardio and resistance training combo), and determination is beneficial. I eat several small meals a day. That seems to work well for me. Cutting down on soda intake will be good. I don't think you have to cut it out all together, that might be too overwhelming. Set small goals and you won't get discouraged as easily. Good luck!

join a gym, lift weights, 3 days a week make sure ur sweating, and u know what ur doing, maybe a personal trainer? make sure ur doing cardio 2-3 times a week too that always helps, eating healthy more vegetables, drink more water i suggest 4-5 water bottles of 590ml or more, the more water u drink the better.

trust me weight lifting is alot better then being on a diet ull love the way it feels , and ull see results, so go join a gym!

and dont give up

Heh. That's exactly the kind of thinking I had to do last year...I had never necessarily been fat, but I thought that losing a few pounds would do me good. I had gained 10-12 pounds in one year! (I blame my job for that, grrr getting home so late and being so hungry.) Anyway, my mom had suggested trying Weight Watchers---she had tried it before (she has NEVER been fat, she was just in the same boat: wanted to lose a few), and she still had the little "points calculator" and the book that told you how many points whatever food is. So I tried it for a while, I didn't do the meetings because I thought they were stupid, lol...and hey! I lost all those gained pounds. If you just stick with it you really notice the results. Plus I'm totally hot now. Hehe just kidding. (But I AM skinnier.)

Diet soda tastes really gross to me, unfortunately. Like bitter water.

I'm lucky, my school, has a big gym. I mean HUGE. Huge enough to run in the winter when it's too cold huge.

Thing that brought this on was that fact that all my Threadless tees are getting a bit too tight to really look good. Haha.

Thanks for the tips and well wishes!

Eat more often. No, really, I'm serious. If you snack frequently, as long as it's pretty healthy and in fairly small amounts, it works really good. It trains your body's metabolism to speed up and saves less fat because it knows more food is coming soon, so there's no need to save it for energy. And definately do not starve yourself for long periods of time, that does the exact opposite and makes your body save more of the fat because it knows it won't get to eat again for awhile.

Plus excercise and stay away from food like McDonalds, yadda yadda yadda.

Piranha: That makes a lot of sense. Thanks. I try to eat a little bit of fruit whenever I fee like I should eat, to shut my body up. I'm going to get myself on a more set eating schedule... Um...fruit IS good for you right? Haha you never know these days...

OMG I can't stand McDonalds. Anyone who even likes MCds should watch "Super Size Me." That movie is so sick, I can't even look at a McDs anymore. Haha. Only "fast food" I can stand is Taco Bell, and I figure of all the fast foods in the world, that has to be the helthiest because I only ever eat the chicken. Hehe.

Yeah, fruit is really good. It's healthy and will shut your body up about sugar cravings, so you won't be as tempted to eat a candy bar.

And yes, McDonalds is the devil. Blech. I hated it even before Supersize Me, but I'm glad that movie came out so other people can actually see how horrible it is. I really like Taco bell, too, though. And Panda. Chow mein is goooood :D

Count the calories you consume daily. Overestimate just a little if you have to.

Count the calories you burn daily. Underestimate just a little bit if you have to (but try to be accurate -- and include sleep; this is a 24-hour day).

Cut down your calorie intake AND AND AND increase your amount of exercise daily so that you have a healthy calorie deficiency. Losing more than 1000 calories a day is unhealthy. 3500 is approximately equivalent to one pound in weight. Losing 2 pounds a week is the most you can do SAFELY and HEALTHILY.

Keep in mind you also need to be eating healthily. If you're going to be altering your diet significantly, then try to make it healthier as you go -- the right servings of every food groups, less processed junk, etc. Too many "diets" focus on some fad theme that is not necessarily *healthy* for you -- forget that, just try to get the right proportion of food groups, enough to get your target calorie intake per day. (Below 1500 intake is unhealthy, btw.) After awhile of doing it -- even if you don't lose weight the first few weeks -- it will become second nature, trust me.

Keep in mind as you exercise that you shouldn't overdo yourself. If you don't exercise regularly, work yourself up to it, SLOWLY. (I have fibromyalgia, I know the importance of it. I'll crash if I do too much. You may just burn out, but that won't help you either.) Do some walking every day -- just get out of your danged house and walk around the neighborhood! It won't hurt you! ;) 10 minutes a day for a few days or a week, then 20, then 30, then an hour, then an hour and a half... as you feel you're hurting/tired/whatever less than you normally are with that amount of exercise, up the amount of exercise you do.

The aerobics -- ie walking/jogging/etc. -- will help you lose weight far better. However, it's also good to do some sort of muscle toning because 1) it's healthier for you anyway and 2) it helps keep you from getting that skin flab as you lose weight. Don't jump into weightlifting or anything if you've never had any training in it, though. In the meantime, www.netfit.co.uk has some good toning exercises that you can do at home.

Like I said, if you're dedicated to this you might not lose weight quickly the first few weeks, as you're growing accustomed to a better diet and a better exercise schedule, and working your strength up to be ABLE to work out enough to lose weight. But if you get into the swing of this and keep it up, you'll enjoy what you eat more (trust me!), and exercise is a big mood-brightener (again, this from someone with a pain-amplifying disorder), and if you keep it up you'll lose the weihgt you want, and you'll be able to adjust to maintain the weight you get when you reach your target, and it'll be a hell of a lot easier to maintain than if you went on some fad diet ;)

Gastric Bypass is for people who are goig to die from being fat. Haha. And it's expensive as hell, too. I'd totally do lipo though, if I had any cash. Also, you can't east ANYTHING sugary after gastric bypasses, which would just be ruinous to my mental state...

brotherman: Oooo that sounds cool. I'm going to go get soda water and koolaid and run some tests. Haha. Do they make sugar-free koolaid?
amandaw
amandaw on Sep 05 '05 at 12:36pm
Oh, and I'll add that all good diets, even the fad ones, no matter what "rules" they give you, come essentially down to keeping your calorie intake down. There y'go. ;)

Lemon-lime and lemonade koolaid mixed together tastes a lot like MD. Use the little packages that have no sugar and use Splenda. I make my own ALL the time. You can even brew it like they did in the 1800s

That sounds yummy man. I'm totally trying that tonight.

I used that calculator thingie. Apparently I use about 1800 calories per day without exercising. Will 1/2 hour of moderate exercise that goes up to like 2250. Now to figure out what I can eat that's like, 1500 calories a day or less. heh.

Just finished reading your big long post, amandaw. Hee. Thanks for all the tips! That stuff is all very useful. I can't do any exercise at home because I'm an ass and embarassed to exercise in front of my room mate (we have a one-room studio-type shared dorm room thing). But I can totally walk the ten minutes to the gym at school. I wonder if they have trainers there....
amandaw
amandaw on Sep 05 '05 at 1:00pm
no less than 1500 intake... haha. up your calorie intake so you can safely afford to lose 500/day or so (which will be about a pound of weight at the end of the week) according to the amount of exercise you do. moderation, it's all about moderation :) and sorry for spamming your blog!
azrielen
   azrielen on Sep 05 '05 at 1:19pm

azrielen
   azrielen on Sep 05 '05 at 1:20pm
Sorry now i'm confused? Up my intake you say? If I eat less than 1500 calories and exercise, etc to burn 2250, that's 750 calories a day lost, right? That's in the middle between 500 and the max of a thousand, so I figured that would be a good place to be. I'll have to work up to it, of course.

Try drinking green tea with your meals. Or even in between them because it makes you not hungry.

I think soy beans are suppose to be good too because they make your cells absorb less fat or something.

Canteloupes good too. Low in calories carbs for a fruit and its healthy.

Snack on cucumbers and lettuce.

I saw this list of good for weight loss foods before... the things I said above are all on it and I also think garlic, onions, beets, carrot juice, and beans were on it.

Drink SHITLOADS of water and don't eat before bed.

Try and cut down on carbs and eat 3 meals a day.

DRINK ALOT OF WATER!!!!

I'm serious, it's the best thing you can do because...

Your Liver is in charge of releasing chemicals into the body telling it to use your stored fat. However, it also picks up the Kidney's slack. The Kidneys run on WATER. So if your Kidneys are hydrated and doing ITS Job, than your Liver can do its too.

nothinglikeit on Sep 05 '05 at 1:46pm
Don't drink diet soda...that stuff is nasty. The stuff they use in it is probably worse for you than sugar. Just give up soda all together...it's not that great, and there are better things you can drink, like juice, and water. Water is especially important...you'll lose more weight if you stay properly hydrated...which means 2 liters a day of water.

Othere than that, I can only say what everyone else is saying, and particularly emphasize the exercise part. Make sure you do cardio and strength training, and remember that muscle weighs more than fat. Often if you just diet, you will lose as much muscle as you do fat, so even though you weigh less, you won't look much better.

I ran everyday this summer plus a little dieting and lost more weight than I've ever lost.
nickOFmacedonia
nickOFmacedonia on Sep 05 '05 at 1:55pm
When I was 12, I weighed 200+ pounds. After I started running everyday, I lost 50 pounds. Of course, that took a couple months.

But then by the time I was 15, I weighed about 250. Then I got a personal trainer and started eating wheat products. After dropping white bread, soda, and all that stuff, I lost 50 pounds again, but only in about three months time.

Start slow and low, then add on more.

Eat wheat. Worked for me.

If you can afford it, get a personal trainer.

Prichard on Sep 05 '05 at 2:07pm
Running is huge for losing weight. It's more convenient than swimming, and you can make progress in just a 30 minute run. I reccomend it unless you have bad knees, in which case go swimming or biking.

Find a running partner. It makes a world of difference.

Run hard at first. If you run hard, you break up fat blocks into fat cells. Then when you're starting to get tired, you can take it easy, because it takes less exertion(sp?) to burn up the fat cells. Drinking water helps you go longer during the run, and also helps you build muscles.

No matter how much you exercise, it won't mean shit unless you cut down on the type of food you eat. No more little debbie cakes, donuts, or cookies (haha I tried that.... how about "less cookies). But absolutely NO fast food. And NO more soda. That shit dehydrates your body, and fills it with chubbly.

Don't drink diet sodas. The fake sugar is terrible for your memory and other things that I can't remember. But my mum drinks diet soda alllll the time and she can't ever remember a damn thing. Good luck on that diet, I lost somewhere around 20 or 30 pounds by just excersizing regularly and eating healthier foods. I'm starting to slip to the darkside food-wise, but I generally eat well. And that's all you have to do.

P.S. The repeat king keeps em coming!
