OK, so I am in webhosting hell right now, and I could use some advice. I've spent ALL DAY trying to figure this out and it's killing me...

OK, so I signed up with a webhost three years ago. Turns out they were a reseller for AKWebhosting.net. They went out of business, so obviously my account was turned over to AKWebhosting. Thing is, my account has less storage space/bandwidth and costs more than AK's current plans.

So obviously I want to change over to one of the more current plans.

Well, I've called their help 20 times in the last ten hours. ALL DAY I called, and I cannot get through. It says they are open during such and such business hours, and those business hours include RIGHT NOW and every other time I have called. No one will answer at all. I've tried to cancel my account with them using their online forms, but my password doesn't seem to work to get into their billing area. None of the links to their fax cancellation form work. I've submitted a ticket, but who knows if they will respond.

I'm freaking out a little, because it's costing me money that I don't have to stay with these idiots, and I can't get through to them at all in any way.

Should I cancel my bank account so that they can't charge my card anymore? Will that work, you think? Then I could open a new account and get a new host, no problem.

*sigh* I just don't know what to do. I feel trapped by other people's ineptitude. Grrrr....dammit.

Any advice?

EIDT: I should probably add that this has been going on for about 2 monthes, being unable to contact them by phone or e-mail. It's just today become a big issue with me calling constantly and getting fed up.

Maybe 2414121 other people are having the same problem and are trying to call. Wait a day or two?

Sorry, I don't really know. I don't have a website.

changing your bank info is an absolute last resort, but if you are truly unable to reach them, might be your only option. otherwise yeah they can continue to bleed you dry. and they will. i am a web designer and we deal with this at work all the time when clients have crap hosting. good luck.

If you don't get a decent service from them, don't pay them.

You got a domain too or just some plain old hosting?

I got my domains from another place, so I could just change the name server and switch hosts.

gerpander: I wouldn't, but they have my credit card info and they auto-charge it. *sigh* I can't do anything to change it since my logins don't work.

my isp gives me free hosting of a 10mb space and i intend to screw all i can out of it. i don't want to get into all that extra hassle just yet.
gerpander
gerpander on Sep 23 '05 at 6:45pm
azrielen, you could call your credit card company and tell them that these folks are no longer entitled to autocharge you as you get nodecent service from them, and then move along to better hosting pastures.

Just send the company an email which states you're discontinuing the bad service as of this date and that should suffice.

If they hassle you, tell them that Ben Matlock will be on their asses unless they stop being cunts.

If I knew any good hosts over there I'd tell ya, but I don't.

Hahaha yeah, thanks gerpander! I just remembered you can do that after your last post. I might have to if they don't get back to me by next week. I'm just so sick of them. I'm moving to iPowerWeb. Everyone I know loves that host.

If you get a chance to visit Alaska, go kick their asses for me, eh? Grr...

Hey azrielen, send them a registered letter telling them that you want to cancel your service. Keep a copy of the letter and the postal information. Close the account and open a new one so they can’t get anymore money. If they send you a bill enclose a copy of your letter with the date highlighted. I had to do this with an ISP once and it did the trick.

that happened to me too, our host went out of business and we ended up being panned off to the owners of the server.

our deal is awesome though, we only pay $15USD a year. the only downside is that we have 350 megs of space and no way to upgrade it with out alerting someone to the fact that we are paying next to nothing for our hosting.

Yeah so, update: My bank says I can't tell them to stop the billing so I need to open a new account. Ew. *sigh* It's a hell of a walk to the bank, too, and the bus/subway system around here barely gets closer to it. Heh.

Hahaha @ MoniqueH. See how fried my brain was? Can't even remember my own profile picture. *giggles* But yeah WAY not me...

@ Ash Sammy: I would love to host with MediaTemple but I cant afford to pay 2 years in advance and unless you do, they are way expensive. They don't provide as much bandwidth compared to the store space they give, either. Compared to other sites. But I might put out the cash, maybe, just to get a reliable service. *sighs* Damn money...

@ bortherman: By "registered" do you mean insured / delivery confirmed from the post office? That's a very good idea. I'll do that...

@ gerpander I agree. It's very silly. I was so pissed at the guy because he was really just not getting what I was asking for. Then when he finally got it, he was like nope! can't do that. sorry you gave them permission to bill so they can. I think if I gave them permission I can tak e it away. Bleh.
