i thought it'd be straightforward - but ohh no, that would be too easy...

I live in the UK and love the threadless designs, so much so that i ordered three t-shirts in the first batch and i've got another three on order.

The first three came without a hitch but these second three - well - they cost around $60 which, in proper money, was £31.03. i was happy with this and thought i'd get them sometime within 3 weeks (chose economy mail not priority - maybe my downfall).

3 weeks comes and goes and 3 days after that period i get a little 'note' from the royal mail stating that the package couldn't be delivered because there was a custom charge.
Now this customs charge was £12.29 - which (minus £1 handling fee) is 36% of the total. Now, VAT is only 17.5% and customs duty is 5%, this seems a tad high.

So much so, that i'm gonna pick up my precious cargo at the post offce tomorrow and whilst there, have a little chat with the postmaster...

just to make things clear - love threadless, pissed off by UK Customs.

i'm even thinking of getting into this tee designing malarky - seeing someone else wear a tee with your design on it has got make it worth it...

It has nothing to do with the Postoffice - don't be mad at them. If it's over £30, Mr Inland Revenue gets a cut. It's shit, I know. There is a way to claim it back apparently if you look on the package. I say apparently, because in 2 years of ordering from Threadless and hundreds of pounds in charges, I haven't once tried to find out how to reclaim those charges. A bit stupid probably.

there are huge custom charges in canada too sometimes though i haven't had any on threadless tees yet, but i found this really expensive build your own dollhouse and i paid like 30 bucks in shipping and when it finally arrived i had to pay like an extra 30 bucks just to receive it. :(

since we pay a tax on the threadless tees, ginette, you shouldn't ever have to pay customs on them I don't think...

i'm not mad at the post office - it's just that i spent 'x' amount on some t-shirts and now have to pay more in order to actually have them - it's like they're being held to ransom...you understand.

@ fatheed: i might just see if i can claim it back - i'll let people know what to do if you can. cheers.

@ shirtflirt: the queen of england is worth about $500 million, not counting property and jewels, etc.. so i reckon she can go fish if i care about her cut :-)

unexpected charges are fucking infuriating.

Customs charges in the uk can generally be avoided by keeping the cost of your shirts around $30 or less i think.

Customs stung me too this week. I was given a gift voucher as a birthday present, and after buying three shirts and paying my own postage, I've had to pay out about 13 quid for customs charges. Are gifts / clothes taxable? No matter, the customs charges price threadless out of my range, so these are my last shirts.

simple tip- buy them in batches of 2. it's annoying but it'll get 'em past customs without a charge.

won't it cost me more on shipping cost?

Nope it works out a tiny bit cheaper but if you account for the fact that its alot less stressful than having to go down to the post office to pay the fee and being suprised at how much it costs I think buying in small batches is worth it.

The damned post office charge you a handling fee too. The vat is also on the whole amount (including postage) which totally sucks. I thought the maximum was £18 ($36) which usually means a maximum of two shirts, or three during sales. I stick to this and have never been charged extra for threadless packages.

ya, i paid the custom charge several times too for my threadless tees. Threadless should seriously look into this problem. They may lost plenty of buyers outside US.

I wonder change the packaging will solve the problem?

Theres nothing threadless can do about the only thing they could do is post the tee shirts as gifts (then you wouldnt have to pay an import fee) but if they did that and got caught they'd be banned from shipping to the country.

Thanks for the hot tip..... have first t-shirt on the way, will remember to only order 2 at a time henceforth.

I get pissed off how they charge VAT on customs charge. Isn't that taxing a tax?? WTF?

What Aled said... also I try and order 2 tees at a time, max. Also, if you're ordering selects, order them one at a time. Like fatheed said, there's nothing the Post Office can do about it...

Good luck!

Glad to live in OZ then, our customs guy don't take a cut until you're over $1000 and much as I love threadless I've never bought that many shirts in one hit.

at least we're not in Italy- they have the worst postal service ever from what i gather. So many sites say "will not ship to Italy"

I don't mind too much paying the customs, cos it still works out (primark aside) much cheaper than buying tees in the UK

Cool, ordering only two tees at a time is fine by me.

Maybe it's worth adding that as a suggestion to customers during international checkout?
