is that a point and shoot? if so I don't think you could make a long enough exposure, but if it is an SLR or something, I'd turn the shutter speed way down

how do I lower my shutter speed?

if you don't know how to do that, you have much more to figure out than long exposures.....

oh typo messed it up...

i said that my point and shoot can do long exposures but many of them can't.

what are you looking to do? just light writing or what?

there should be a few options that put the priority on aperture or shutter speed, maybe an "A" or and "S" in which case choose the s and lover it, make it be a few seconds, probably about 10 or 15, make sure you have a tripod as well

I have an example and quick explanation here

ooh, I can do that!

If you have a point-and-shoot, try and see if there's a Manual setting (usually indicated by an "M"). If it allows you to adjust the shutter speed, max it out. This also means you'll let in quite a bit of light, so increase the F-number (for aperture) until you get a decent exposure.

And if you wanna write letters like in that picture, you don't need a tripod

really @ peater? Because the grass and such is in focus. I would recommend the tripod, I mean I swear by it at night, at least.

oh yeah rolf, you could be right. I was thinking of doing the script with a stationary light and a moving camera.

Ooh, that's cool, Peter! How are the scribbles different colours?

It was multiple cars at a red light, basically. So there's the traffic light, street lights, red brake lights, building lights... and the coolest are the blinking turn signals, which become dotted patterns under long exposure
