Panda Bear's came out this year. That I can say is up there. Tyler the Creator and Fleet Foxes had some good tracks. The latter will need a few more listens before consideration. Goblin was kinda out of control and it won't be better than good for me. And looking at what came out I need to remember to listen to St. Vincent and Beastie Boys' new albums. I only heard Surgeon and what played in the Beastie short film, both very, very good.
Usually something by Sufjan Stevens is always close by for me to listen to.
Thrice's new one, Major/Minor, is really good. I've kinda drifted away from 'heavier' music, but almost everything about this album I love. Dustin usually writes deep/thought-provoking lyrics, and the complexity/quality of the songs never disappoints. I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but it's definitely worth a listen if you're curious.
Also, I've listened to Sigur Rós's album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust quite a bit lately too. Good stuff.
Probably TV on the Radio's "Nine Types Of Light." I'm still findgin more and more to enjoy in the Dearth Cab's latest, "Codes and Keys". Lots of the self-titled debut album "Yuck" is good ol' fashioned Pavement-esque 90's goodness...the last song is seven minutes of hopeless and then hopeful amazing.
Been mostly listening to a TON of comedy lately, haven't been in the mood for tunes as much. Lots of Patton Oswalt, some Chris Rock, Albert Brooks, Steven Wright.
Yeah Tyler can be really good when he knows what he's talking about or what he's doing. But his youth reflects a lot of his work and it doesn't shake out too well for me.
Tyler the Creator and the whole Odd Futures clan I'm on the fence with. I really enjoy some of his raps and boasts and witty wordplay (and the beats are filthy, juvenile and fun)....but there's also a lot of "I'm saying and doing weird shit for weird shit's sake" that so many kids get fooled by today into thinking is actually clever or saying something.
It's different now man, it used to be more inventive and interesting.
It's the youtube way of comedy and cleverness, just stuffing enough random acts and words and things into the mix that people will mistake it for something worthwhile or cool.
