Riding Bikes is Dangerous Business

I ride a bike to work due to gas prices and my car being
totaled by some idiot.... anyway

This morning I witnessed a man on a bicycle who obviously
rides all the time due to his outfit, get hit by a car.

Luckily cops were close by, but the rider was a bloody mess.
The driver of the car was acting like it was the bicyclists fault.
Which it wasn't. She was on her cell phone yada yada so I had to file a police report.

The moral of this story is I need to start wearing a helmet.

I know, it sucks... motorists in a lot of places are total jackasses to cyclists. Thankfully we have a lot of bike paths here... I'd be scared to death to ride on the actual road.

Toronto's touted as a cycling-friendly city, but in truth a few cyclists get killed every year. The city has a bunch of "bike lanes" which are worse than useless, because they're not separated from the roadway, and they're always clogged with cars and trucks who are stopped there "just for a minute".

And on the other hand, there are all the biketards who tear around on busy downtown sidewalks, and it doesn't take much speed for a bike to seriously maim a pedestrian (it's happened to a few friends of mine).

Add to this the unfortunate reality that the Toronto Police are pretty useless at enforcing the rules of the road (except for busting impaired drivers, which is a Good Thing).
