Basically we have to do some sort of 'volunteering' that shows the power of one person. (We read The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay in english class.) Since I've already been rejected by two places for having poor German, I decided enough was enough and I'm just going to be lazy and provide free babysitting this coming wednesday and thursday (1/2 hours wed, 4/3 hours thurs).

But allowing parents to have one night out free isn't that... 'powerful', so i wanted to do something with the kids that made them think or whatever. Bear in mind the age range will be anywhere from 5 till 12, and that these kids are pretty well educated (children of a lot of -ologists.... internationally recognized researchers, promising younger scientists and scholars, and personalities of intellectual life off the website for example).

I don't want to bore them to death but I don't want to be too loose with them either. Suggestions?!

How many children will you have? That makes a biiig difference.
I'm a councilor at a day camp for children ages 5-12 - so with a group size reference I should be able to offer some advice.

Maximum 10, but I'd doubt that. I have yet to actually ask the parents, but I'll kick them out of their homes if I have to.

I'd say around 5.

The Oreo Game

Everyone is given one oreo. Carefully twist open your oreo so that most of the icing is on one side. Lick the icing and stick it to your forehead. Then, using only your facial muscles, maneouvre the oreo into your mouth. (It's all in the eyebrows.) Fun to do, even more fun to watch.

Hahaha. No they aren't German. New Zealand, British mixtures. But they aren't stuck up or anything like that.

That sounds REALLY awesome Polyester Jones. Though I can't think of anything educational about it, but...

Witness! The power of one's eyebrows! Totally educational.

If you want to do more intellectual type activities, maybe try writing exercises? Some of those, when you make them fast and creative, can be pretty fun, e.g.

You are HUGE. Pick something to be, something really terrifically gigantic. Write at least five sentences describing what's going, what everything else looks like, your challenges etc, without saying what you are. Then you have to read it out loud and others guess what you are.

Give each kid three random words or phrases ('clock', 'put that thing back where it came from', and 'orange sunglasses'), and give them two minutes to write a short story using those words.

Now that's something my english teacher could appreciate.

One issue is that I usually tend to babysit them ANYWAYS, so i want to make it different but not like, 'wtf where did the babysitter go haha this person is a joke'.

But this has already been really helpful, so thank you all!

Songs. There are so many educational songs it makes me sick.

Also, children love arts and crafts. Maybe bring a prism and explain the wave nature of light to them (in SIMPLE terms).

Also, the word game. Last letter of the word must be the first letter of the next. Apple, eagle, expert, tiger etc. Make them use the biggest words they know.

The point is, little kids are easily amused. And you know waaaaaay more than they do. So teach them a few basic things and you top any other babysitter.

i will keep it all in mind, thanks very very much.

and now I am off to finish homework, because my teachers will think it is a little strange that I teach little kids so much and do none of my hausaufgabe. so good bye, thanks again!

Science. Kitchen science.
Buy a ton of diet coke and mentos and have a contest to see which kid could get the highest geyser. You may need to help the younger ones lest they leave your house sticky and dirty.
