By arty comment, I thought you meant something more like this:

Born in 1935, Thomas Ray grew up at a gas stop on a lonely Arizona highway. Inspired by the latently homosexual truckers who abused him in the latrine out back, his work uses rock iconography and pop culture references to evoke those acts of sexual debasement, soundtracked by the Classic Rock radio station classics.

In this work, he portrays a form of pop music roadkill surrealism, creating a Cronenbergian hybrid of organic and man-made materials. The unfortunate creature expresses the pain of such an existence, while the camp hot-pink flashes of pain perhaps reference Thomas' early days at that lonely truckstop.

Arty farty message? Hmm, let's see...

This image is a raw representation of repression, rage, and the desire to be happy with oneself. The juxtaposition of the (mechanical, passive) amp and the (organic, active) animal shows a clear conflict between the desire to conform in the increasingly cold and detached modern society (accentuated by the icy colour-scheme) and the stronger desire to break free and emerge as a fully-realised entity, in tune with one's own subconscious nature (and the 'nature' that is the natural world, that is so divorced from the surreal colours used herein) and entirely accepting of the entirety of oneself, to be capable of joyously declaiming "Oh my god! Yeah!" and meaning it. While the abbreviated form of the words perhaps suggests a residual conformity (or at least modernity), the fact these terms are often associated with internet-based subcultures could equally suggest the exact opposite: an unconventional approach in a disconnected world, 'connecting' to others through the electronic medium. This idea of connection and tranmission is followed through in the presence of the large (retro) headphones and the lines emanating from the animal's mouth (the hot-pink colour implying a certain 'queer' quality to the subconscious it represents, perhaps providing a reason for the repression). However, the ambiguity of the image leaves the conclusion to be drawn by the onlooker: is the animal listening to the music of nature, the voices of those with whom it has connected, or the controlling sounds of the Machine? Is its cry one of anguish, joy, or simply a statement of its existence? And do the four black holes in the amp represent a 'crack' in the machine/conscious mind, a way to access the subconscious, or are they a reference to a famous quartet such as the four gospels or the four elements? In the end, the true meaning of this intensely powerful image is for you to decide.

I love you Vindemiatrix.

Let's get married and become pretentious academics, and live in a big house with our precocious and over-indulged children.

WOOT! (Can you believe I only got a C in art?)

... Let's name them Tarquin and Jemima. :D

My girlfriend has a great story about that:

She lives in quite a posh area of Glasgow, and the upper-middle class, cosmpolitan people who live there have a habit of giving their children names like that: Max, Felix, Tarquin, Jemima etc

Once my girlfriend was in a petrol station (gas station) and a mother and her kids came in to pay for their petrol. The kids were running around the shop squealing, as kids do, and the mother, who was obviously a bit stuck up, shouted

"Felix! Xander! Stop it!"

She then turned to the guy behind the counter, who was a bit of a ned (word for a certain kind of Glasgwegian - basically the opposite end of the spectrum from the woman), and the guy said

"Did youse jist call yer wain Santa?"

HAHAHAHA

This may only be funny if a) you can imagine the Glaswegian accent and b) it is told out loud.

Apologies.

Ahahaha! XD That's brilliant.

(I'm British too, so no need to translate 'petrol station' for me. ;) )

Absolutely no need to apologise, it was very funny. :D I'm noticing that nearly everything you post is either true or amusing or both (so I'm glad you like me now, since a day or so ago I got the impression you didn't - probably based on nothing!).

13strong on May 17 '07 at 3:43pm
I wasn't sure where you were from. The translation serves for any non-Brits who want in on the joke, I guess.

Why did you get the impression I didn't like you? I can be a bit of an aggressive/abusive/moody bastard, but it's a storm in a teacup really.

Cool. :) Good to be inclusive!

Umm, probably that blog about nu rave kids. And then a vague feeling of being blanked by you in other blogs even when we were 'on the same side', as it were - like the blog with the big debate about bisexuality and virginity and stuff. However, I'm on the rag atm (sorry for the tmi), and so I am oversensitive to pretty much everything right now! So don't worry, I don't think you were at all actively mean to me, my paranoia was just working overtime due to an influx of hormones. ;)

Sometimes when The Hulk is on a rampage, people get hit by flying debris, or The Hulk forgets to stop and say hi to people he knows.

Do not be angry or upset with The Hulk, he knows not what he does.

Good metaphor, huh?

Yup! Totally get it.

So anyway, back to critical analysis of this very fine piece... you say it sold for $15,000? Private collector or gallery?

13strong on May 17 '07 at 3:53pm
Private collector of course. I believe it was bought by a trucker.

And I guess since he sold it himself, he won't be eager to do that kind of thing to get it back...

Oh well, yet another masterpiece lost indefinitely. Posterity will be ravaged, barren of all good artwork, if private collectors continue to fill up their miserly hoards!
