What is going on here? My average score has been steadily declining over the last few weeks and it's not my fault. I don't claim to be the most fantastic or original artist or anything. My submissions obviously aren't the creme of the crop. But seriously, I thought the designs were screened before being put into the running. Why on earth have been SO MANY really crappy designs lately? I've been forced to hand out so many zeros over the last few weeks that my average score is sinking like a rock.

I find I skip over the crap ones now, and only issue out on people who have genuinely put in an effort, or are good.

You're not being forced to do anything. You simply choose to vote.

That's an idea. Although, if I do that it'll take for ever to make it here: The 4ok Club

I'm almost about to celebrate my 20,000th vote!

Also, i rarely give out zeroes. Even if it's a shitty shitty sub, the person tried and they deserve something for their efforts, unless it is a rip-off, copied too heavily from someone else, racist, too lazy for words, etc.

Seriously, have you guys seen the crap people wear just because its a name brand?? The worst shirt on Threadless trumps anything from some "designer" store.

Maybe I should just move my scale up a bit too. Then I would have something for those subs that I wish there were negative numbers to use.
lajlaj
lajlaj on Oct 19 '07 at 1:33am
but scoring is all relative isn't it? so if you vote lower on everything, giving a 0 might not be as bad.

hahaha I only went back like 3 designs from the last one put up for voting and found both a those.

What I'd like threadless to do is make some kind of watch feature so votes could be informed when a designer they like has something up for voting, it would help streamline the voting and I hate when I miss something good cus I didn't feel like swimming in all the crap designs.
stubbythumbs
stubbythumbs on Oct 19 '07 at 1:48am
I think the biggest problem with the amount of crap that we have to filter through is that sometimes one can get into a pattern of scoring "0" or "1" and skim over the good stuff. But letting everyone submit is an important part of threadless.

hence the 1.5 rule. if you want to score less crap, do it less often. designs that make it past the 1.5 rule have a week, so you should just score as seldom as every 6 days if you want the best stuff.

and that''s a LOT of 0's

i do the same staffel... its also a lot more 5$s... and it gives the score a tiny bit more weight in the final score
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Oct 19 '07 at 2:05am
I don't think they screen them for appeal, that's for us to decide. Things get dumped for being too big, too pixelly, too many colours, maybe for offenisve content. The 1.5 rule takes care of the unappeling stuff.

I think the more people who join Threadless and want to submit and do submit, the more crap we'll see. Cos we aren't all talented designers, but we all deserve a go.
betterthanhuman
betterthanhuman on Oct 19 '07 at 2:08am
One of the listed criteria is "Poor Design"
Here is the text from the submit page:

Poor Design
Even though your design may be submitted properly, we do decline some submissions for poor design. All designs are pre-screened by a panel of Judges before put into the running.

EDWIERD- OMG those are amazingly atrocious! Wow! no wonder some other slightly less horrid but completely pointless tee designs make it through with those kinds of designs being submitted here! As for i didn't do it, i think that might have been done by a new serial killer that is starting to gain awareness of their craziness, so let's keep our eye on ol' stacey there.

By the way, voting 5$ or 0 makes a mockery of the voting process i feel. I love ya staffel, but it's like saying everything that isn't a 5$ from you is worthless. Unless you truly feel anything you don't love is worthless. Which i don't think you do.
stubbythumbs
stubbythumbs on Oct 19 '07 at 2:21am
that makes no sense frickin. for one, voting 0 doesnt make something worthless. even if i voted with a full scale and gave a 0, it still deserves some credit, but thats not what voting is about.
FRICKINAWESOME
FRICKINAWESOME on Oct 19 '07 at 2:30am
Actually, voting is about for many the value of the artwork or taking the time to really judge the work and give it the appopriate score. It seems the least i can do with people taking their time and creating awesome things for us to eventually wear.

I give a 5$ to things that are completely original and i must have them, 4 to amazing works of art as well, 3 to good pieces that have some flaws in them or just not something i'd wear on my chest, 2 to ideas that a above average but have serious flaws or are unoriginal, 1 to give a score to anyone who entered the contest, and a 0 to racist, completely lazy, or stolen designs.

If Threadless wanted you to vote yeah or neigh with their scale, they would eliminate all other numbers and just go with the slogan way of scoring. Ignoring all the other numbers on the scale is not using it correctly, don't you think?

But i mostly blame Threadless for this, because all they need to do is put a voting scale in the first "score designs" area of the website with a small guide that shows you what all the points mean for scoring, b/c no one can use the system properly you have never been told what the numbers represent.
