It seems like there have been a crazy amount of new people of late and it would also seem they don't carry the same aesthetic as the Threadless crowd of a few months ago. Not that it's all bad (or that my stuff is anything to get excited about either), but it's a far cry from the good old days. I'm relying, of course, on the fact that a few people who have been here for a while will read this...

I think it could be, in part, due to the fact that Threadless is giving more prize money to winners. I think the coolest thing about Threadless USED to be that you got a shirt with your design on it printed, but now it's that you get a buttload of cash (and other prizes if you win a themed contest). Just curious what others thought...

I don't understand why you are upset with this.
I also don't remember any time when the prize was just your printed shirt. I don't design, so maybe I'm wrong, but I've been active for a year (known about Tless for a bit longer) and I've never heard anyone say that they got a shirt when they won. I always thought that the general idea was that you can just buy your shirt with the boatload of store credit they give you.

I think in 2000, you got $50 and your printed design.

And plus, going through all the crappy subs only makes it better when you come across that one amazing sub that knocks you off your chair.

Personally, I'd rather get "$2,000 in cash and a $500 Threadless Gift Certificate (can be redeemed for $200 cash)" than $50 and a shirt.

And I think we were all thinking the same thing, Tora-Steve.

i have been here for a year or more now... and i must say, i have seen these type of blogs a lot. everyone tends to think that threadless evolving is a bad thing, remember it wasnt long ago that 4 color no halftone 1000$ was the design limits. Now we have new custom made threadless shirts, limitless design possibilities, a 2,500 dollar payout, etc...

you really think threadless is going to stay small, dont fight it, swimming upstream is a lost battle, just enjoy the ride, go with the flow as they say

i...im just completely baffled as to why the idea of winning 'a buttload of cash' is so upsetting. You do realize that with that buttload of cash you can easily afford a copy of your printed shirt?
Ellsswhere
   Ellsswhere on Dec 01 '07 at 11:48pm
i think the idea tora is that the cash is the draw to design as apposed to the happy warm feeling in your tummy from getting your art slapped on a shirt, in the end though a crappy design for money is just the same as a crappy design for the warm fuzzies so it makes no difference, its only the motivation that has changed

if you are looking for some extra spicy submissions please take a look at my blog... "submission impossible: 6 million designs in 2 days" I really like them but thats just me. Do you?

Do they cram the cash up the butt? 'Cause I can see how that would be upsetting.

To some.

I think this week there were a lot of boring designs. I think this is probably because of the sale/thanksgiving backup.. somehow. But overall I haven't noticed any trends of decreasing quality.

And seriously, it takes 1 second to click 0 and be on to the next design =)

I like the boring stuff. It's fun to critique, and helps my appreciation for art and the geed subs.

Well yes, the money will bring in a lot of people who just want to strike it rich by imitating someone else's process. But, the other side is that it also attracts a great deal of very talented people who will challenge the existing crowd to develop. It also challenges the market in general to pay better for design work, which I'm not going to lament in the slightest.

I think you've missed my point. I probably titled this thing a little inappropriately or something. I'm not 'upset' over anything, it just seems to me that when I first joined (yep. It was only April...) that every week there were more awesome designs than Threadless could print but now (and of course this is all opinion based around what I find tasteful and of course what I find tasteful isn't likely to be the same as what you do) there are very few that I give a very high rating.

I don't care if you've been here longer than me. I don't care if you personally think your designs are incredible (and you probably like your own stuff if you're gonna put it on here) and I don't care if you like money. I thought Threadless was cool because it allowed artists of varied styles the chance to be noticed and worn.

"in the end though a crappy design for money is just the same as a crappy design for the warm fuzzies so it makes no difference, it's only the motivation that's changed."
-Ellsswhere

This is the first time since I've been here (Yeah. It's only been 8 months) that I've seen so many 'crappy designs' (unoriginal and contrived) and so many new names that I don't recognize saying 'oh my god. I love this!' about them.

That's the point. I think the added money is bringing in new people with a different sense of what Threadless is all about.

That's probably fair.
FRICKINAWESOME

So more people are putting up shitty designs because of all the money now, and all that means is that you have to wade through more submissions to get to the people who truly care about artistry and applying that on a tee. So it's not the quality of submissions have gone down, it's that the quantity of shitty submissions have gone UP. Some months may not have as many designs that blow me away, but then the next month brings a whole slew of must-have designs to emblazon on my chest.

Sheesh, for such a naysayer about Threadless having so many crap designs, you sure have a pretty high voting rating...

"That's the point. I think the added money is bringing in new people with a different sense of what Threadless is all about."

I actually disagree with you on this point. First, as Threadless becomes more popular it is unavoidable that there will be a dilution of uniqueness. Creativity is a rare commodity that becomes yet more scarce as the masses enter the scene. Second, I'd say these imitators have a very clear sense of what Threadless was about. They've seen what sold and are trying to imitate that in the hopes of past victories carrying them through. New Threadless (whatever that means) is largely derivative of old Threadless (whatever that means).

Actually, I've noticed in the past week or two there have been a ton of amazing subs. I've given out a lot of $5's.

Almost always, there's a ton of crap subs and then a few decent ones. Recently however, those ratios have been changing and for the better.
Oxgoad
Oxgoad on Dec 03 '07 at 1:20pm
And I suppose that's a matter of differing tastes. That's why I posted this in the first place, to see if anyone agreed with me. Obviously, nobody does. I still don't understand why so many of you have to try to insult me with crap like "'the good old days'... in April" and "for such a naysayer about Threadless having so many crap designs, you sure have a pretty high voting rating..." like I somehow can't really mean what I'm saying. It's just my opinion and I never expected it to be yours.

For the record, I think this week's prints are pretty rad.
