What would be the best way for designing a t-shirt or even anything?

Should I start by sketching with a pencil and paper so that there is an immediate idea and keep revising

or

go straight to illustrator with the idea, submit it for critiques and work from there?

Also, would scanning your pencil and paper drawing into illustrator to trace an easy way to illustrate?

Your thinking about it too much, but most designs start out on paper, its an easier way of working out what exactly you want to draw. You'll probably go from doodles to a draft of a design, maybe improve it then put it on illustrator and mess around with colours.

Both ways work. I think Glennz just cranks them out purely on the computer, while Priscilla draws them and scans (judging form her style.)

They've both gotten their fair share of prints.

take a piece of paper and draw about 20 versions of your idea, take another piece and fill it with more sketches, no more than 5 minutes on a sketch.

then pick about 5-10 of your favorite and spend 10 minutes on each revision... pick 1 or 2 of those designs and work on a rough draft of your final.

scan then finish your design, keep looking at it and looking for ways to improve it, oh and never forget that its too late to go back and rework the entire design, ie: never get lazy

Cover your body in paint. Throw yourself against a canvas. Take a photograph of it. Trace in Illustrator.

that didnt work.

Here's what I usually do: pencil drawing to pen redrawing to scan to hand vector trace in inkscape to coloring in illustrator.

during school i always sketch during class, granted I have no idea what's going on, and then use photoshop and illustrator.

on break i just sit and use my tablet, paper, whatever i can get my hands on. and go with it.
