I have been lured several times into watching a chick flick which I had already deemed lame from watching a preview or simply judging from the cast (i.e. just about anything starring Kate Hudson) I don't know what part of me thinks that maybe once I just might find a fun, charming chick flick. Every 6 months or so, one comes along and I think, well maybe that will be good and it's inevitably not.

SO

My question is to you ladies- and possibly dudes- who have stumbled upon surprisingly good chick flicks. List 'em here.

Some I have enjoyed:

28 Days- a Sandra Bullock film that I could hardly call a chick flick as it deals with addiction but in that fun, Sandra way

Under The Tuscan Sun- decidedly a chick flick, but enjoyable. Maybe it's the Italian location?

Legally Blonde- you can judge me all day long but I thought it was pretty funny

Other great non-chick flicks that star women and men will likely avoid:

Me Without You- an independent English film with Michelle Williams and Anna Friel and Oliver Milburn (swoon)

Broken English- I have two words. Parker Posey.

Amelie times forever. That and Breakfast at Tiffany's are my go-to feeling miserable and girly movies.

But I'm not adventurous with chick flicks. Generally, I watch them when I'm back home and mom and sister want girl time.

I've yet to see P.S I Love You even.

Pride and Prejudice

When Harry met Sally

Pretty Woman

Breakfast at Tiffany's

I loved these movies.

Hated Serendipity.

I love Dostana, it's a Bollywood film. It's about two men who both fall in love with the same girl. But she thinks they're gay since they lied to her so they could become her roommates. This is basically the opening of the movie.

And I know this isn't a movie but I also love Coffee Prince. A Korean comedy. You can watch it on Hulu. There's only 17 hour long episodes and it all wraps up at the end. It's basically the story of boy meets girl, but boy thinks girl is a boy which complicates everything. This is the theme song.

I definitely agree it can be difficult to find a satisfying romance.

I kinda liked Serendipity. Probably because it was the first real chick flick I ever saw. I think my Spanish teacher had us watch it just because.

My weakness is musicals.

I'm in the minority of people who actually likes You've Got Mail. I just like watching it now and thinking how...antiquated the technology seems. But it's still interesting. Meeting people online, forming relationships with people you've never seen. I think I've done those things.

And yes to Love Actually.

According to this list, the only chick flick I've seen would be Thelma and Louise. I sure liked it, but for some reason it doesn't seem to fit in this list.
For good balance, I haven't seen any guy-cry film either.

Oh man, Better Off Dead...

"My little brother got his arm stuck in the microwave. So my mom had to take him to the hospital. My grandma dropped acid this morning, and she freaked out. She hijacked a busload of penguins. So it's sorrrrt of a family crisis. Bye!"

I like You've Got Mail better than Sleepless in Seattle. I actually really hate Sleepless. Put a man in Meg Ryan's role and that movie never would have made it. I mean come on... she stalks him!

anonnymouse, I LOVE Little Shop of Horrors. I used to love singing along with it on my cassette tape.... showing my age here. My favorite musical though is The Music Man, hands down.

And Amelie is NOT a chick flick. Lots of men like it plus there's tits and stuff in it. See, I hate that stigma that just because a woman is in the lead role, its immediately deemed a chick flick.

Space, you are too much! You should start a dick flick blog, the first entry being Roadhouse.

So now I think I should see Love Actually.

haha@just One of the Guys..."he has TITS." and calling my member Spike for years after this were only two of the plethora of ways that movie changed my life for the better. That and the bad guy from the Karate Kid getting his ass whooped once again, I also felt he needed another roundhouse to the junk bucket.

Chick flicks I love with all my heart:

Roxanne: One of my favorite comedies of all time and Steve Martin's mainstream best. Updating Cyranno for modern times done perfectly.

Men Don't Leave: I've watched this movie more times than I know, not quite sure why I know but something about its earnestness and exploration of divorce from the smallest members of the family on up touched something in me after my parents divorced at a young age possibly. And the fantasy of a teenage boy being deflowered by a crazy and well-meaning babe like Joan Cusack was very appealing :)

Amelie was already mentioned so...

About A Boy: One of the best performances of Hugh Grant against lovey dovey affable type, a film that tweaks the usual chick flick conventions like a purple nurple that tickles and hurts at the same time. Not to mention an incredible soundtrack and one of the best shot comedies in terms of symbolism and telling the story silently since Dustin being seduced in The Graduate.

Death and The Maiden: Not really a chick flick, but a lifetime-esque story but done in the most convincingly dramatic and some of the best ensemble rvitting performances I've ever seen. Ben Kingsley versus Sigorny Weaver as a woman who thinks she might have captured her husband's business associate as the man who tortured her so many years ago, but cannot prove such a thing since she was blindfolded, unfolds as terror builds and doubts surface to both people's stories until the amazing finale.

So many more I'll type here when I have a looksee through my DVD/Blu Ray collection.

I don't care what genre a movie falls under, as long as it's good is the only qualification I need to watch and love it :)

Pretty Woman

Legally Blonde was funny, yes.

That other Drew Barrymore movie where she pretends she's a high schooler but is a reporter. First Kiss? Last Kiss? IDK

Isn't the general consensus that a "chick flick" is a romantic comedy?
At least that's what I've always assumed.

I think that's the mainstream description for the term Kohl, but I take the phrase more to mean anything aimed at the woman demographic more than a man's traditional predilections.

Y'know, like Charlie St Cloud and all those other outstanding Nicholas Sparks adaptions.

I watched Love, Actually at CP's house once!

We were really hung-over and kept falling asleep to it and waking up to watch bits and pieces then fell asleep again.

Same with Bill & Ted's, haha

I really like Serendipity, but I just ogle Kate Beckinsale. It was on TV last weekend. I was cleaning the house but I stopped and watched it instead. All in all, Serendiptiy is better than cleaning the house and features a pretty female lead.
