The average score I've given is 1.13.

I bring this up because I’ve seen posts where some Threadless users have a go at other users for having given low average scores, as if that’s somehow mean-spirited and not in the spirit of things. Can someone explain the thinking behind that? I’m sure the vast majority of low scorers aren’t deliberately trolling and giving zeros just for the hell of it. We’ve all got our own internal scoring system, surely all equally valid. There’s no point in being kind with the scores you give, as it’s supposed to be an honest reaction.

Personally I give zeros to anything that’s technically a bad design / bad execution AND a crappy concept. If it’s a crappy concept but good artwork, it’ll get a 1 or 2 – also if it’s a great concept but the artwork is below par, then it’s a 1 or 2. If I’d wear it it’ll get a 4 or 5. If it’s good but I can’t see myself wearing it, then it’s a 3 or 4. If it’s got a nubile, submissive woman with perky jugs for no good reason other than titillation, it gets a 0. If it glorifies guns it gets a 0. If it’s one of those fey designs with lots of silhouetted birds and flowers and wistful-looking, doe-eyed hippy-maidens gazing skywards, it’s a 0.

So what’s your average score, what’s your scoring system, are low average scorers like me really just grumpy old meanies, and what do you automatically give a zero to?

1851 submissions, giving an average score of 2.01, I think my scoring system is similar to yours.
But I don't score low if it is something I wouldn't wear, I just don't $ it.
I can't say that I have anything that gets an automatic zero's because even though I don't really like gun subs, there have been a few occasions where I have scored them high purely on their artistic merit even though i would never where them.

I score low if the design is obviously copied from another source.

Scored 911 submissions (wow that's low... haha) and my average is 2.77

Partly, though, that's because I often can't be bothered to score a design I think is really crappy (of which there are many). I tend to score the more worthwhile ones. There's not much thinking behind that - just an intolerance and impatience with garbage designs.

Your scoring system sounds a little lower-ended than mine, but yeah - sounds fine.

What people on the other blogs are complaining about is that it's obvious a lot of the voting public (mostly the people who don't use the messageboards and things) tend to have a knee-jerk reaction to designs they don't like and mark it a 0.

The problem is that they never use the 1,2,3 or 4. And the problem with this is that weirder or less cutesy concepts and designs are being scored incredibly low.

I think I might just wait it out til after the school holidays and then see if that affects the scoring of more... "mature" designs.

my average ....7095 submissions, giving an average score of 2.00.

there is a lot of bad designs, my average was like 1.7 before but i have been giving a 2 to almost all the "ok" designs that before would be like a 1 or 0, and more fives even if i don't $.

There's a few people on here whom have scored 500+ designs and have an avg score of less than 1...that's exceedingly lame to me

when i first started was like a 3.something... it just gets lower

Can some one confirm clicking the I'd buy it option actually does anything for the final decision of whether it's printed or not...I always assumed it just put you on an email listed alerting you if it's been printed.

Speaking of...only tee I've ever gotten an email about it being printed was Migratory Patterns of the Popsicles...I didn't buy it.

The I'd buy it counts a lot in the first 24 hours of the sub since the change to the 1.5 rule the sub needs to get a certain number of $ in addition to the score to stay in the running.

I think that the amount of $ tells threadless what to print, not the score.

Yeah - the I'd Buy It $ button is a big factor in whether or not a T gets printed.

I'll tell you how I score:

$5 I must have this
5 Love it, but may not buy it
4 very good artwork and concept
3 good concept and good artwork
2 either good concept or good artwork (but not both)
1 You submitted something, which is more than I've done
0 arghhhhh, it hurts my eyes (or it's stolen)

I mostly give 2's and 3's, but sometimes I feel like I give a lot more 1's and 0's than usual.

Debora that sounds very much like mine. But still my average is lower than yours... I think I may be a meanie. Or just not skipping the scoring of crap ones.

I scored one evening (fnar fnar) and gave mostly 1's and 0's. It goes through cycles. Sometimes I think I'm being mean too, and I try to look at subs with a fresh eye.

I have scored 9884 submissions, giving an average score of 2.17.
My scale is very similar to your's. My criteria rests on concept, execution/art work, style, and if it would look good on a shirt.
I don't think I automatically zero anything without looking at it and giving it a chance. I guess I would automatically zero blatant copies or stolen material without a doubt.
To me it's hard to get a 4 or 5 since it requires so many things, but usually a $ is accompanied with them.
It seems that there are times that I 1 or 2 something a lot, then other days its more like 2 or 3. Just gotta catch me in a good mood I guess =p

Im just getting into the scoring and finding it really hard to give out high marks. I think it is important to score as much as possible though and not skip bad designs. I was doing that and they would just keep comming up and getting in my way. Last night I sat down and decided I'd score until I found a Tee that I really liked and that I would buy. I burnt my pizza coz it took so long and I was amazed at how many really bad designs were out there. Im not saying mine are hot shit but I think people are forgetting this comp is about making T-shirts that people are actually going to want to where. There are lots of really awesome designs out there and thats why this site is so kick-ass BUT the crap designs far out number the good designs and its our responsibility to get rid of the crap designs.

Basically I decide in the first three seconds if I like and understand the concept and artwork. If its really bad I move on but if it has some merit i look closer and ultimately decide wether or not i would buy it as a T shirt or not. Don't feel bad if your average is low it all comes down to personal preference anyways.

in the beginning I scored much higher... but the more I see the easier it becomes to see the winners... and lack there of.

1021 submissions, giving an average score of 2.44

I agree with your scoring - somewhat ( I like gun designs for some reason?) Replace guns with anything "skull" and I'm there.

Your ava score will rise if you just don't vote on things that are 0... is that bad?
I hate giving 0, so usually I just skip it. Unless it's on my sh*t list... aka Skulls. ya know?
