This is NOT a pipe
This shirt is awesome. The only problem is this: the Mario pic isn't a pipe in French. It is in English, but not in French. In the original Magritte painting, you have the words "This is not a pipe" with a picture of a pipe. But, now, you have the words "This is not a pipe" with a picture of something that is actually NOT a pipe. So it's not as witty. I'm probably gonna buy it anyway if it gets reprinted because it's awesome.

It was damn near impossible to understand what you're trying to say, but i disagree... I think the illustration is of a pipe. Would you call it anything different?

I mean, in French, we wouldn't call this a pipe. It is in English, but not in French. In French, it would be probably called a "tuyau", but never a "pipe".

my point is: people who don't understand French and only know the Magritte painting will think this is very clever, but it would be much more clever with a picture of something that actually means pipe in French

I do kind of understand the point you are trying to make here but I think you are over analyzing it to a degree. It is a parody and serves it purpose well in my opinion. Then again I might be highly biased ;)

The direct translation is irrelevant. To say that because you speak French you don't find this as funny is, frankly stupid. As long as you speak English you should understand this as the strength is in the concept. You sound a bit up your own arse to be honest. Good for you, being bilingual and all, but you're perpetuating another popular French stereotype.

I understand the concept of the shirt and I think it's pretty funny, but I also understand that it's a spoof on the Magritte and as such, it should follow the same pattern

Sorry if that sounded harsh - but if it said 'Cici n'est pas une tayau' it wouldn't even be funny in French because it is not a perfect transcrpition of Magritte. The humour and charm in this pastiche, in part, is the fact that it is treading over the language. It doesn't stop to think about what it might mean in French because it's funny in English. And that's what counts ;-)

Though I'm familiar with the original parody, I also saw it as this is not a pipe, it is a doorway (because you could jump down some of them to secret levels.)

Funny to see that some people think this is not a shirt for French speakers. This shirt would be better for people who doesn't understand French even if it's written in French!?



I still think it's even funnier for French speakers who understand the sexual reference (which was as first intended by Magritte - don't try to say I see things that don't exist because I'm too French, I'm just as French as Magritte... or a bit less).

Magritte meant more along the lines of no matter how photo-realistic the painting may be, it will never be a pipe. For him at least, it was impossible for anyone to truly capture the entire essence of an object in art.
