For someone who just wants to buy a really good camera package and doesn't know much about them, what do you think of THIS?

Good camera?
Good accessories?
Good price?

the camera itself retails at around $1000... and you get a ton of extra stuff with it, so it seems like a good deal. though of course it depends on if you'd use all of that stuff and if you have the money to buy it lol
brentendo
brentendo on Oct 19 '09 at 9:46am
well.. I checked on google shopping and most placesseemed to have it at around 650-700 quid, which is about $1100 I think..

Is that $1100 for the camera or the whole package?

$280 extra for the accessories seems great!

It's a very good deal, but like brentendo said, are you gonna need it?
If you are just gonna use it for trips and things like that, you really don't need it.
If your considering a future in photography, then BUY NOW.

Word of warning, my wife only has about half of that stuff and it is a huge bother to transport.

I would get it. The seller has a 100% rating. The camera is great - the accessories are amazing. I wouldn't think twice if you are gonna get use out of it. Just take a couple crappy senior portraits and bam paid for.

Go for it.

I love when I kn0w things...

Okay, I was reading something about this a few months ago when I was looking for a camera. Basically, what the article said was that though it looks like a good deal because you're getting all this stuff it actually isn't.

For example, the telephoto and wide angle "lenses" are actually just add ons (as in they attach to one or more of the lenses you're given).
And in terms of the wide angle lens, it's sort of useless because this set comes with a 28-80 and 50mm lens both of which are considered "wide angle" (any number small than 50mm is a wide angle).
The same with the 58mm telephoto lens. This set comes with a 75-300 and a 500mm lens both of which should be just fine for regular shooting (I have a Nikon/Nikkor 75-300mm which on my camera becomes a 100-400 and it's just about perfect.)

Then there's the T-mount for a Nikon D-SLR. I'm not sure why you'd need it except if one or more of the lenses you're buying isn't made for a Nikon mount (and most manufactures make most lenses with different mounts for Nikon, Canon, Pentax, etc.).

And then there's the lenses. Except for the 50mm which is actually a Nikon lens the rest are Tamron (excluding the attachments) which is a good brand but... it's an aftermarket brand. I've never done any research into the differences and whether it's actually a bad idea to buy aftermarket but personally if I was spending over $1000 on a D90 (or any camera) I'd probably go the extra distance to pick up lenses by Nikon.

Okay, I'll continue in my next comment.

Don't be fooled by the extras.
Most are either things you won't use (don't need), cheap and useless, or already come with the camera (eg.battery, charger, strap, cable)

The lens' are very cheap and plastic. Have a look at them at bhphotovideo.com
here
and here

The only decent lens is the nikon 50mm, and even then it's the cheaper 1.8 not the 1.4

Also, what you need to know is that the 50mm will actually be a 75mm on the D90 as it's not a full frame camera.

You're probably better off browsing through bhphotovideo.com and buying the D90 body and a decent mid range zoom lens, or a wide angle and a telephoto.
Mya Jamila
Mya Jamila on Oct 19 '09 at 10:31am
Okay, little things:
1. That mini tripod you see there, you probably won't be able to use it except with a really light lens (think 50mm) if at all (the body might be too heavy).

2. That three piece filter kit contains good ones (not necessarily a good brand/construction but a polarizer and uv filters are always good to have) but I'm pretty sure they'll only fit one of the lenses you're getting.

3. The 500mm Reflex Mirror Lens contains no brand which is worrisome to me. Plus, it's a "free gift" which doesn't make any sense because if it was a good lens there should be no way they can afford to give it away because good lenses are mega expensive.
I've heard it said that the lens makes more of a difference than the body (excluding the photographer which can make or break any photo).
And it makes sense, a 15 mega pixel camera will allow you to take photos that you can blow up to enormous proportions but if the lens on that 15 mega pixel camera doesn't have an aperture large enough to let in enough light then the photo probably won't turn out the way you want it to without going grainy because the ISO was set too high to compensate for that.

4. By putting the charger, battery, USB cord, software and carrying strap in there as things you get it makes it seem like you're lucky to be getting them. As if they're extra when really you get those with every Nikon camera that you buy.

5. When you're shooting with 16gb memory cards you aren't really going to need a ton of them so the memory card wallet isn't a huge deal. Especially since most memory cards you get come with little cases of their own. (That would be super useful for me because my camera can only take up to 2gb cards and I'm currently rotating between approx. 12.) But with new cameras it's not a big deal.)

5. On the memory card issue I was reading an article and in it the photographer mentioned that he prefers to shoot with small cards (1, 2, 4gb) because then should something happen to his camera/card he won't loose all his photos. (Because he spreads them out over multiple cards.)

6. If you're going to be using it for "product pictures" (I do not know what of) I'm assuming you'll be using a studio type set up at which point the flash that comes with will probably be quite useless (either because you'll buy big lights, etc. or because it's such low quality that it doesn't meet your expectations/needs).

7. I'm not sure the either of the cases the camera comes with will be big enough to hold everything and if one or both of them do keep in mind they'll be heavy and cumbersome.
I'm currently outfitted with my D50 camera body, a 28-80mm lens, a 75-300mm lens plus a few accessories (extra battery, charger, small tripod [different kind], bean bag [very useful as an impromptu tripod/resting place/cushion] plus memory cards) and my Lowenpro 9"x6"x7" [very rough estimate] camera bag that slings cross body is heavy. As in heavy enough to cause me shoulder pain if I wear it for more than half an hour or so.

I think I am finally done...

I'd agree with what most people have said to an extent but that price is way too good to be true.

Tamron are a cheaper make but their lenses are still relatively expensive (its kind of hard to make a cheap lense) and if the items do match the image then the value of the package is more like $2000.

Personally I wouldnt bid on it because I feel like your going to get ripped off, if you were paying for decent stuff thats not going to crap out after five minutes it would be $2000 and up.

I'm actually supprised you can get a D90 for $1000, serriously in the UK it goes for £800 which is $1,300.

brentendo
brentendo on Oct 19 '09 at 10:36am
and after all that the item just ran out of time with no bids haha

but thanks for the info Mya, I just learnt a hell of alot more about lenses and stuff than I knew before
Merzi
Merzi on Oct 19 '09 at 10:39am
Yeahhhh. Definitely too good to be true! They would have to be losing a ton of money on that sale! Good lenses themselves are generally around $500 dollars at least! So times five (if one is a kit lens) That's already $2,500 not to mention everything else!

If it's real that us an unbelievable deal! But I kinda doubt it
eskimokiss
   eskimokiss on Oct 19 '09 at 10:46am
(its kind of hard to make a cheap lense)

you're kidding right?
if there weren't such lenses then there would not be disparities in prices of upto 4-5 thousands of dollars between lenses with the same focal range.

Those lenses in the package (the tamron ones) are the cheapest lenses you could purchase. They are as entry level as you get.

yeah, I was gonna say, there's a lot of junk in there and the only things worthwhile are the camera (and stuff that comes with that (strap, cords, etc)) and the 50mm lens which is cheap nyways.
stubby43
stubby43 on Oct 19 '09 at 10:50am
I'd just like to add that I kind of disagree with Mya on the memory card front, whilst its probably true that its better to use lots of smaller cards for photos the d90 isnt just a point and shoot camera, its a video camera that films in 720 HD.

Having to change your memory card every 10 minutes would be pretty lame, for that feature you need a big memory card.
stubby43
stubby43 on Oct 19 '09 at 10:54am
Have you actually handled a tamron lense? because I have to say their really not that bad, they dont always have the nice features you get with a Nikon or canon lense (like optical image stabliasation) but on the whole they arent too bad and get the job done.

Having said that I only sold the high end tamron lenses which tended to be only about £100 cheaper than the name brand version.

But if the lense is actually glass then theres no way to make a cheaper version of it.

Stubby, I'm not bad mouthing tamron lenses in general, just the ones that are in the package. Ofcourse tamron make nice lenses some probably better than the alternative nikon lenses.
Even tokina and sigma have quality (and expensive) lenses which match nikon and canons lenses

fair enough sorry I took it that way, but yeah the lenses in the package are junk.

Professor, straight up I wouldnt buy something that expensive off of ebay, you'd be better off buying from a reputable dealer I'd be really supprised if the warranty on these cameras would be valid (if their this cheap there probably grey market meaning they were imported from poorer countries like china, which is almost the only way their making a decent profit), it will probably be a little bit more expensive but if something goes wrong you have added protection.
eskimokiss
   eskimokiss on Oct 19 '09 at 11:20am
Professor, those nikon lenses might be slightly better than the tamrons but not by much. All lense manufacturers (including nikon and canon) have cheap entry level (plastic) lenses. If you google search each lense you'll find that none of them would be more than a couple of hundred bucks each if that.

My opinion, buy the body and 1 or 2 decent lenses, an 8 gig card, a uv filter and a backpack. That's really all you need atm, an you'll end up paying less than these packages
Steve The Great
Steve The Great on Oct 19 '09 at 11:21am
Ethan. Go to bhphotovideo.com, buy a D90, buy a nikkor 50mm 1.8, buy two sd cards.

you don't need a package that contains a whole lot of junk and trash which wouldn't work even if you were to use it.

Also I have other more pressing things to spend my money on.

Good point. I thought about the fact that the D90 has more/better saving options (multiple Jpg and Raw options [I think]) than my D50 but I didn't factor in the video capabilities.

I too wish I'd gone for the D80. My D50 is good but I regret getting it.

As a stills camera I would go as far to say that the D80 is a far better camera than the D90, it certainly had a better kit lense but when you consider that its also a video camera that really changes things.

Its actually a hell of alot better than most video cameras in its price range because your shooting through a high quality lense (way better than most video cameras) and your also able to change the lense.

and because its a camera (I dont know for sure) you will most likely have alot more control over your image, by doing things like changing the apeture (somthing you couldnt really do until you were spending $4000 and up before).

Thats game changing in terms of budget video cameras.

Ok so its a lot harder to keep steady because it wasnt designed for that but all it really means is you use a tripod more (which is what you should be doing in the first place, its like film school 101).

Its a great video camera.
