As some of you may know, I had to sell my beloved Vanagon (seen on the right side of my profile being violated by a dragon) due to ongoing maintenance issues.

I didn't want to replace it with just any old car, of which I looked at many, so I took my time in selecting exactly what I wanted.

I dated a girl about 7 years ago that had a Toyota 4Runner, and the best thing that came out of that relationship was my love of her truck. I've longed for one ever since, but they were always out of my price range until now. The time was right, the car was right, and the seller was willing to bargain.

So, here is my new (to me) 1995 Toyota 4Runner:

Lori - My sister and brother-in-law have a Corolla and a Prius (both 2007s) and my other sister has an older Camry. Great cars, all.

Hector - I have spare window tint from my sign shop days and I am already disabling the door handles. Problem solved!

Sara - What are you getting next? I fully endorse craigslist as a source for finding it.

Dom - Yeah, the guy was so nice he threw in a way back machine at no charge. I just have to set it for around 2:30 last Saturday and tell him I was only joking about wanting the truck.

I'm not getting another car for a while, although my nissan was kickass, (its windows came fully tinted FBI style) it broke down all the damn time. Over the 2 years I had it I had to replace the radiator, battery, axles, etc. It wasn't worth the hassle but I think its new owner is lucky to have everything fixed for him, LOL.
DaddyDom
DaddyDom on Jul 21 '08 at 3:32pm
some states have cooling off periods. I don't know where you are, so I don't know if yours does. Check the VIN and the manufacture date on it, then check on the internetz and see if it falls within the recall dates for head gasket issues. I had one if these. 2 blown headgaskets. Heaps of $$ out the window. No help or coverage from Toyota. It's a relatively widespread problem. I urge you to do the research on it.
pyr4lis
pyr4lis on Jul 21 '08 at 3:33pm
heheh yeah i'm definately going hybrid next time i need to buy a car. lol but knowing toyotas unless someone steals it or smashes it beyond repair i should get a good 200k + in mileage.

i love the forest green color of your truck btw. :)

HOLY SHIT!!! I just realized that now that I have reliable transport, I might be able to make it to a meet-up if it's within driving distance!
professorE
professorE on Jul 21 '08 at 3:42pm
Dom - I'll check on the head gasket issue. Mine has 183,xxx miles and no problems yet as far as Brian knows (he was the second owner). I have to go outside and look up the VIN.

WAY TO JUMP ON THE SUV BANDWAGON! ..... RIGHT AS THE WAGON HAS FALLEN OVER AND CAUGHT FIRE =p

as long as you realize the resale value is probably going to be nil given the new realities of gas prices (although in fairness from what I remember of driving my vanagon that milage maybe pretty similar between the 4runner and a vanagon??)

I love 4runners also... in fact I really (god help me) like especially smaller reasonably off road capable SUVs in general, they are great for some things.
DaddyDom
DaddyDom on Jul 21 '08 at 3:44pm
I hope it's all good, man. It's just, when I saw it...and the year...seriously got me a little sick to the stomach. And i LOVE 4Runners. I've had 2.
professorE
professorE on Jul 21 '08 at 3:51pm
Dom - Thanks for the heads up. I've just read through some forums on the subject and feel confident in mine, but I'll still look up the VIN.

maddingo - Yeah, I'm getting a little better mileage than the Vanagon, and have louder speakers and A/C to boot! Also, I only paid $2300, so I'm just gonna drive this until it dies, then put a new motor in it and drive it some more...
maddingo
maddingo on Jul 21 '08 at 4:07pm
for $2300 as long as the frame aint all rusty (i assume you checked?) or bent =p

good deal should be fun for $2K worst comes to worse you could find out how to replace a head gasket =p from what dom was on about.
DaddyDom
DaddyDom on Jul 21 '08 at 4:08pm
$2300? oh, no worries then. drive that bitch into the ground!
professorE
professorE on Jul 21 '08 at 4:13pm
Dom - I'm looking and found nothing so far, but I'll soldier on.

maddingo - Only rust is a finger-sized patch over the driver's side front fender, and all the body lines/gaps are consistent. That top picture looks as if it's dented, but it's an errant shadow. I crawled under it and all looks as it should for a vehicle of this age.

Hey Ethan. My mother has had three 4 runners, all have been fine gasket wise. All I can say is you'll be selling limbs for gas. My mothers suv's suck up the gas. Also yours looks fairly low and I don't know where you live, but watch for ice. My dad rolled my mother's '95.

Wow. I live in Greensboro, NC, so we get ice like every 5 years or so. Also, I've been picking up hitch-hikers, and with the help of the solutions I layed out for Hector (above) extra limbs should be no problem.
