I think the reason people feel overwhelmed is because of the close-up way it's presented. But if you look at the shirt on the model it's actually quite clear that the design has to do with collaboration towards a goal.
It's sort of a two-for-one deal! You get a clear, visually pleasing first impression, and then when you look closer you get lots of surprise details that give the design life.
You're right, it is bad taste. Just because Christianity is a dominant religion doesn't mean it's okay... Just think if the design involved a rabbi instead of a nun.
People are so afraid of being labeled as close-minded or conservative that they forget what is and isn't acceptable.
