Hey all you veteran designers and bloggers out there!

I have a question for anyone who's ever done a collab. piece and submitted it to Threadless. In particular, I've loved how great things like the Pizza Party and Monster Mash Collaboration have come out and how great of an idea they were. I have lots of ideas that I'd love to get out there, but have some interest in trying them out as collaborations to see how they can evolve with more than one person's input.

So to everyone out there who's collaborated on a shirt design: How did you go about it? I'm impressed with the fantastic blog kept by alexmdc on the shirt, and I've seen FRICKINAWESOME on so many people's submissions as a collaborator... I want to try my hand at this and just would love some words of wisdom before I jump off into the deep end.

So guys, what did you do? I know I can just throw out an idea, but how did things work if a design prints? Also, what works well for contests to hype it up and get visibility for the design?

I'm already studying the Pizza Party blog for ideas haha.

I posted a blog like this and got some response. Then I went on people's blogs about their designs. Not on the actual design to see if they'd be interested in hearing an idea for a design. If they said yes I emailed them, if they didn't responded I let it go. So pick a designer you like find one of their blogs and see if they're willing to work with you.

I think collabs can be a very difficult thing to pull together. Lots of people sign up, then drop out, and it gets to be a bit of a nightmare trying to get everyone's illustrations together. I've taken part in almost all of the community collabs here, but I don't envy the organisers.

As for what happened when it printed - well, for Monster Mash all the money + the GC was divided equally between the collaborators. For Pizza Party only the prize money was divided as coupon codes, while the $500 GC was used to fund contests to promote the sub during voting.

Wait, did you mean community collabs, or collabs between two people?

awesome. that sounds like a good idea... Even though people drop out and stuff, I would love to try my hand at a collaboration, even if its a small one. I have print envy with all the awesome artists on here, I need to kick myself in the ass and get drawing... submit some stuff :)

Well, I have an interest in both community collabs and collabs between two or even a few people. I think what FRICKINAWESOME does is pretty rad, tons of stuff with other artists sounds like fun... I'm not sure what he does but I'd like to know
