updated with the hands colors changed, and a slimmer font. I also adjusted the tracking a bit.

hahaha, sweet idea! i don't know if the hands need to grow in size like that, though.

are you planning on hand drawing .. the hands?
TheInfamousBaka
TheInfamousBaka on Jan 07 '09 at 4:22pm
It's a funny idea, though I think it would be a lot better if 1) the hands were illustrated and 2) the size were consistent. :) I think you've got something here.
sonmi
   sonmi on Jan 07 '09 at 4:23pm
also, this might diminish the concept some, but maybe to make the point clearer, in tiny text many you can have each letter underneath the hand?
Lhiiiz
Lhiiiz on Jan 07 '09 at 4:23pm
yeah, i wasn't sure about that...yeah, I was thinking about it...I tried it with the photos up there, but it seems to cut off: the imagery doesn't flow like a drawing would...I think more fluidity would also help the er...implications of it too.

funny idea!
I think it might be better if you just erased the wrist part of the hands off so each hand was more circular at the palm. . . and also either wrote the title on there somewhere since most of the general public doesn't know how to read ASL or else just make the hands form actual letters. But as I said it's a great idea!

i think simple line are is all that's needed for this. you probably don't need to color it. maybe approach this like one of olly's infographics, kind of?

Lhiiiz

I'd thought about that too Sonmi. I'm not sure about that yet, but it never hurts to try something out.

Also, I subbed this today, so please cross your fingers that it gets through this time!

nice idea, Ive seen something like it done before for morse code, and they'd put a key of what the symbols mean on the back or elsewhere on the shirt, that could be quite a good way to go about it if you dont wanna put the letters by the hands
Lhiiiz
Lhiiiz on Jan 08 '09 at 7:55pm
well, I thought about maybe just writing it at the bottom under the design instead of under each hand...right now, it reminds me of an eye chart.
brentendo
brentendo on Jan 08 '09 at 7:59pm
yeh that would look good, and it'd make the play on words alot more punchy aswell
Lhiiiz
Lhiiiz on Jan 08 '09 at 8:06pm
right. I'll play around with that. Thanks!
mezo

What if you did blue ink on the blue shirt for the text and then you can blow up the letters and put them behind the linework of the hands, so it's overprinted and subtle.
mezo
   mezo on Jan 08 '09 at 8:45pm
It may also look interesting to stick the apostrophe in there (what's)...even if there's not a sign for it.

Wow, Stef, thanks! Yeah, I love the idea of the text behind...I'll be trying that out in the morning! Mac and Cheese! FTW! I was thinking about putting in the question mark or apostrophe in there...we'll see.

Punctuation may break up the monotony...or it might distract. Hell, I don't know.

sonmi
   sonmi on Jan 08 '09 at 9:32pm
right now i really like it with the tiny text, because it kind of looks like figure numbers on first inspection, but mezo's idea sounds good too
Lhiiiz
Lhiiiz on Jan 08 '09 at 9:32pm
I'll try it both ways to see what I think. Right now I'm just kind of giddy about playing with the background text tomorrow. (wow, nerd.) Thanks Stef, thanks Sonmi!

Here's an updated version with suggestions applied.
brentendo
brentendo on Jan 09 '09 at 11:29am
nice, i like the newer version of the text, though I think you should try making the type darker than the tee colour, so the white of the hands pops more against it
sonmi
   sonmi on Jan 09 '09 at 11:30am
bff4l, MEZ.

ohh. i'm not sure which version i like now. i like brentendo's idea, though. try having the background text black?
NiNTH WHEEL
NiNTH WHEEL on Jan 09 '09 at 11:32am
Prefer the first version to the second, but both work.
Lhiiiz
Lhiiiz on Jan 09 '09 at 11:33am
the black text is too harsh, it competes too much with the hands, but maybe a darker version of the same blue as the shirt.
mezo
   mezo on Jan 09 '09 at 11:33am
I LIKE IT but think the text should be darker than the t-shade as brent said and also should be taller than the hands, not wider (that makes the text look out of proportion). Also, if you add the apostrophe then add also the question mark!
Lhiiiz
Lhiiiz on Jan 09 '09 at 11:35am
OK, so I'll try it darker and change to a narrower font. I know Stef I know, I just couldn't get the question mark placed correctly earlier so I left it off for now.
Lhiiiz
Lhiiiz on Jan 10 '09 at 12:30am
i tried laying a transparency over the hands to highlight the text, but still keep it subtle...although I have no idea how to translate that for printing.
againstbound
   againstbound on Jan 10 '09 at 12:33am
I think the white's too bright and gets all the attention, maybe just a light blue to keep bot the hands and the text focused?

It's worth a shot...I'm going to shelf it until Monday. Thanks Hector!
NomadSlim

I like the colors. I would try decreasing the size of the font and adjusting the tracking. The real letters just are a bit off right now.
