First of all, just to clarify, do black and white count as part of your 5 color limit?
Also, I'm trying to make sure I have everything ready to submit an idea for a shirt: besides the thumbnail, what are the specific requirements for the image we submit to be critiqued? It has to be 640x480, but is that the space where we put the artwork, or variations of the artwork on a shirt, or what? And lastly, can't we design directly onto a shirt? By that I mean, can the original artwork just be the image on the t-shirt template, rather than say a picture by itself, then taken and imposed onto a shirt, or modified to fit onto a shirt?

I'm was just slightly confused by the official guidlines.
Thank you.

you will want to do your design on a larger file then use the template for the presentation

If you win it will need to be larger at least 150dpi

white and black are colors - counted in your 5

make a design in PS or CS2 or flash then copy the final product over to the template onto the t-shirt

use the template for color swatches to build your design on the shirt color

Cool, thanks a lot, that was helpful. I think I just submitted a design to the actual contest instead of the critique on accident, but I guess we'll see what happens. I think it looks alright...

i'm sort of a newbie too and i can tell you how to fix your newbie mistakes (saw your critique page.) The 640x480 is your drawing board. Most designs will use that to focus on the actual artwork. Voters want to see detail before they vote. So use the majority of your space for your artwork. Use a smaller space to show placement and/or a palette of ink colors. And just stick to 1 or 2 shirt colors. Threadless, to my knowledge, has not printed on more than 2 colors (1 for boys, 1 for girls.) Just look at printed shirts and jump to the original subs and you'll see what i mean. And try to never use text or bounding boxes unless absolutely necessary. Hope that helps.
