Ah I love The Shins!



I went with some friends to see them open for Belle & Sebastian, but we ran into some unexpected and horrible traffic, so we only got to see them play their last song for the night! Also, I missed their free show here in LA because their website gave the wrong time! (I did see James Mercer run past me, though).



It's like the universe doesn't want me to see them play live.

No trying to rain on y0ur parade rizzice, but seeing them live was one of the worst concerts i've ever been to. They barely deviated from anything they have done on the album, they played way too many slow songs that put the audience to sleep, and their onstage banter is beyond dorky, even for me. I did love how the darkewr-skinned band member played his riffs out with one foot up on the monitor with his best rock face, like he was stomping out Metallica riffs or something! That was funny. I really like The Shins too, which is why i went to the concert, but they are nothing special live and have taken my appreciation of them down a tad.



That and the last album was merely OK. Their first two are amazing tho. What's your favorite tune of theirs?

In my opinion, their last album is FIVE STAR! FUcking AweSome! My youngest brother and I are friends with James Mercers Cousins here in Utah and every time that I have seen them play live, they were HOT and the audience was having a BLAST.

I wonder if they were just exhausted when you seen em?

I love New Slang and Girl on the Wing. But I haven't gave them much of a chance yet ;)

yeah i heard that they just sound like their albums live. the last album was way too indie synth shit. i miss the pure stuff.

im REALLY not into indie. i just cant see a time when i would want to listen to it. it all just seems about gone...which doesnt make sense but there you go. im talking especially about stuff like Band of Horses, Islands, Final Fantasy etc. I'll still listen to the shins new album but only because you cant not listen to the shins.

I agree on Islands...i couldn't stand that album...terrible songcraft and just not-fun or particularly ground-breaking. Band of Horses is not the epitome og originality, but im always a sucker for well-produced acoustic guitar strumming tunes with good lyrics behind it. I havent heard much of Final Fantasy except for his remix of the Stars song "Your Ex-Lover is Dead," which was quite a spectacular original and his version is almost as good, which is quite a feat.



As for the new Shins album, it just really doesn't catch me after severa listens the way the first two albums did. Dunno, but the songs don't build up in quite the same ways and reach that explosive feeling inside of me like their other work. I'm glad you dig it so much kiLLyou...I would never say it is a bad album by any stretch, just not much in it for me to come back to over and over.



As for seeing them live, I stand by my review. lol. I have seen a TON of live shows, and it was by far my most dissapointing.
