Shoot from the hip

Does anybody know that "shoot from the hip" is just a phrase that means to shoot randomly and on a whim, in the moment without thinking? It doesn't mean to literally hold your camera at your hip and take a picture from there.

There have been so many designs for the Lomo contest with that literal interpretation that I had to ask.

that's pretty much the idea, although it's not discouraged to shoot, literally, from the hip.

do you know that an idiomatic phrase like that likely stems from a more literal root and that creating a literal interpretation of an idiom is generally something that people are allowed to do?

Sure they're allowed to do that, but that's the ONLY interpretation of it that I saw - it didn't seem that anybody was aware that there was another meaning to it.
