So Firefly is awesome and should never have been cancelled, yadda yadda yadda. Anyway, the episode Out Of Gas is possibly my favorite. It has a surreal time structure and cements the characters through flashbacks and current scenes. But what I love the most about it is that none of them would have survived without the actions of each other.

Jayne shut the door and saved the oxygen.
Kaylee showed Cap how to fix the engine.
Doc showed him where the adrenaline is, which kept him alive long enough to put the part in.
Wash set up the beacon.
etc etc.

If each of them had not been exactly who they are, they'd all be dead.

Now my sister saw it and loved the series, but hates this episode. She feels it has a poor narrative structure and a weak ending. The way she paints it, there is a random catastrophe, a lot of dramatic nothings, and a deux ex machina at the end to resolve a problem that was bullshit in the first place.

So what do you think?

I LOVE Firefly. Can't' believe it stopped. That was one of my favorites as well, your sis is crazy!!! A lot of movies/shows are based around unlikely events...

cool, dude. That's how I feel.

PuterBoy, me either. Except that I do, and it kicks ass.

PubertyBoy, are you being intentionally obtuse? Firefly is not anime.

Dragon star, did you read about that crazy feminazi who went on a long winded LJ rant about how firefly is sexist and Joss Whedon rapes his wife? It was beyond comprehension.

In other news, Firefly is awesome and I like all the episodes...

That's one of my favorite episodes (my favorite is Ariel). I love, love, LOVE the ending shot with Mal totally ignoring the salesman and just staring off into the distance at Serenity. You can just tell how in love with that ship he is :-)

Oh, I think that's a great episode. Jaynestown was hilarious, but I wouldn't call that my favorite either. Not sure which is. I thought The Message was also very well done.

I actually just watched Serenity about an hour ago... Think there's any hope for more episodes/movies?

haha YES tracer, that's probably the scene that stuck with me the most about the whole show.

have you read the comics, shakethesheets? there's the Those Left Behind series, which came out right before Serenity, and there's the Better Days series, which is out right now (the third and final chapter is coming out soon).

Spookybeth, I didn't have the pleasure. Got a link?

tracerbullet, that is an awesome shot. Well acted, well composed.

I fear there will never be more episodes, but I hope I'm wrong.

Yeah, she does have a few good points, but then some of her more radical opinions and her outright refusal to enter into debate with anyone of a different opinion to her kind of take away her credibility...

It's a bit of a shame really, she sounds like a very bitter and unhappy person.

Lots of people are like that. And many of them are on the internet. And they're talking about Firefly. *check thread title* DOH!

I should really watch the entire series. I loved the movie so hard even though im not a Josh Whedon fan, it was such a nice attempt at a different kind of sci-fi world and style. I watched an ep a long time ago but i probably had that bad buffy taste in my mouth. I'll ty it again some time, thanks for the inspirado guys!

FA if you liked the movie you'll love the series. The dialog is much better and you'll get a chance to know the characters and how awesome they are.

Hope and Fox are mutually exclusive.

Bonus tidbit: I was once an after school kids show host for the local Fox affiliate. I taped about 8 episodes. They never aired because this out of work magician who knew the station manager wanted the job. He sucked, and got canned, and then a friend of mine got the gig and did well.

Series wins over the movie, but of course I love the movie too. Except the whole Wash thing. BAH! Cry every time.

Love Out of Gas!

the best is watching it with people who have never watched it before and getting them hooked and then depressed that there aren't anymore

if Out of Gas was lengthened to be twice as long- it'd be better quality than a lot of movies

You arent crazy. Great episode. I love all the characters. The comics are great, they are worth a pick up. They explain what happened to the "Hands of Blue" guys. I have yet to big up the newest series which came out recently.

i think there's supposed to be a comic book series coming out all about shepherd book, which is awesome. i believe the common consensus that he used to be an operative.

the young girl who played little river in Safe was awesome. i wish they had used her for Serenity instead of the actress they chose.

I see where she's coming from. There's a lot of latent misogyny and racism in television and film. It does get to the point where it's hard to tell the difference. Heart of Gold is my favorite episode, which I'm sure is not hers. I liked it more for the Seven Samurai sense of rag tag heroism and the development of Mal & Inaras relationship rather than that everyone got some.

I'm not a huge fan of Book and Wash dying in the film. Book was a good counterpoint to all the grotesque minority villians in the series and movie. Zoe is a good character, but I rather like the presentation of a softspoken and intelligent black man that stands for something.
DragonStar
DragonStar on May 15 '08 at 2:50pm
I didn't like Wash dying either, though Book seemed reasonable. With Book, it's like "you'll never know." With Wash, it was "hey, random death!"

I suspect the deaths had something to do with the actors and their desire to continue or not if the series was picked up again. Like, maybe Joss said "Anyone who definitively does not want to be in a followup series and wants a cool death scene, raise your hand."
