Whee! Sexual harassment is fun! /biting sarcastic tone

So very tired of the sophomoric beavis-and-butthead-level designs.

Yes, because a clever joke about the nature of young boys and how we all sometimes wish for x-ray goggles is sexual harassment. He's not grabbing her tits or raping her, he's admiring her fucking lingerie. Guys think girls are attractive and like to look at them; a fact of life you, too, must become accustomed to.

So very tired of prude dipshits that can't appreciate a little humor.

i'm with slmstanley on this one. i'd hesitate to call it sexual harassment, but nonetheless, come on. the world we live in is saturated with sex. almost everything in pop culture (movies, tv shows, tv commercials, magazines) has something about how horny men/boys are for women (but where is the pop culture sex about women's lust for men? do we not think it exists?).

i don't think slmstanley is being prude, i think she's just ready to be hit with something different. boys being horny? aren't we allowed to just exist without being constantly reminded of the insatiable male sex drive? without being made to feel like objects of desire and barely more?

Surely Alladotonys inspiration for this was the comic adverts of the 60's.It has nothing to do with sexual lust or harrassment but is simply a pastache of pop culture of a simplier and yes, less p.c time . I'm buying one anyway and congratulations Alladotony on your 1st winner.

I'm so pleased that teenage boys feel confident enough in their harrassment-spotting abilities to be able to inform us what does and does not constitute sexual harrassment.

Apart from being a negative, patriarchy-reinforcing image, her legs are shitty. So there.

As a purveyor of X-Ray glasses, or "specs" as they're colloquially known, I am highly offended by the notion that their use is voyeuristic or perverted. If you are so offended by mere glasses, why not take up arms against nude mannequins. Surely, they cannot argue back. They are made of felt and Styrofoam. Sometimes plastic. Why no indignation towards the David? His wiener is right out in the open, pointing at men and women, children and the elderly alike. Surely, the David is no more offensive than any other human body, no? So next time, reconsider your fear of the human body before tyrannically dismissing other's love of it.

"I'm so pleased that teenage boys feel confident enough in their harrassment-spotting abilities to be able to inform us what does and does not constitute sexual harrassment."

The moment one makes a comment such as this, their opinion is immediately negated, especially considering y0u are only almost 21. This already is a stupid argument about how a t-shirt that is a homage to x-ray specs is sexual harrassment. It does not need to be made worse by some 20 year old talking about how since shes a few years older, her opinion has more weight, because thats bullshit.

And just so you dont have to go check my age, because I know you will, elitest, I am 24, and I dont think my age has anything to do with it, it has to do with my grasp of logic based thinking.

Lanathan on Aug 06 '07 at 9:31pm
A t-shirt design can be two things at once: some of you say it's an homage to x-ray specs, and some of you say it carries a message of condoning sexual harassment. I personally think you're both right. I'd love to hear more about where both sides are coming from, though.

The courage to point out when something seems like it might be hurtful to people with less power than others in society (pointing out when something seems sexist, homophobic, racist, etc.) should be rewarded. Next time someone points out one of these unjust situations, instead of snapping to, "that's not what was meant, so this person's complaint is invalid," maybe say instead, "hm, where did this person get that from? Maybe I'll ask." And then ask. Politely, without assuming the person is wrong before the person has even said a word. You might be surprised and learn something about the way things affect people in different, real ways.

I have to agree with the original poster. If someone were viewing me in my underwear without my permission, I'd consider it harassment.

Nevertheless, I think it's a cute t-shirt design. Nothing says cute faster than a homage to the days of cheating kids out of hard-earned bubble gum wrappers with the use of false advertisement.

As a feminist, I wouldn't wear it but as a nerd, I'd be tempted to buy it.

Not to prolong the (mass) debate but...

"Sexual Harassment" involves unwanted/offensive sexual advances in which the victim feels unable to object/retaliate due to the possible negative consequences. This certainly doesn't fall into this category (unless the child is actually her boss!). I think people often lose sight of what constitutes sexual harassment, not to mention discrimination of other kinds.

Even if the boy were to grab the lady's arse, it's still not sexual harassment. It's more likely assault, but I doubt it'd go to court as the woman would just clout the little bugger!

She's not real! She has no feelings! It's a joke about a small boy who wants to see some underwear (as I'm sure a lot of them do). The woman in the illustration has not been harmed in any way. For fuck sake get a grip.

It may be racist, since they are both yellow.

You miss the point. Not altogether surprising, I have to say. The point is, a young boy will have much less experience of sexual harrassment than a young girl. So while not being ageist, I am being sexist and saying that boys should perhaps really think about what they know on the subject before putting finger to keyboard.

Kryz, the British definition can be found here. It includes 'Unwanted conduct on the grounds of your sex' and 'Unwanted physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct of a sexual nature'.

Exactly. It's not sexual harrassment unless the woman realises. Which is why it's fine, and in many ways charming.
loserbeech
loserbeech on Aug 07 '07 at 6:38am
I don't think anyone said that this shirt is actually harrassing someone itself. I think the point was that it promotes the idea of woman as object, which is harmful because in real life boys do not have X-ray specs, they have super creepy staring abilities, demeaning comments, and hands.

I think the shirt is charming, but:

"Exactly. It's not sexual harrassment unless the woman realises. Which is why it's fine, and in many ways charming."

I hope this was tongue-in-cheek, because that would be condoning many extremely illegal activities: putting a video camera in dressing rooms or bathrooms, spying into people's bedroom windows, taking pictures up girls' skirts.

And maybe a young girl who is trying to be holier than thou should realize that this is a joke tee, with no message, other than the ones that man hating nu women want to find. Its a joke about x-ray specs, get over it.

The idea of the specs came from a time where an ankle was sexy, and this is also the theme of the shirt. This wasn't a time where women were objects of lust like they are today, which is a shame, because the misty nostalgia that might be had over this shirt is ruined by girls who try to find anything in anything. Not altogether surprising, I have to say.

seriously, threadless is like, a 1000x classier than all those other places. this is well rendered, well articulated concept. It's not offensive and i can't even believe people would take time out of their busy days to blogg endlessly about something that is the most moot of points. get off your high fucking horses. if you don't like it, don't buy it. thats whats great about this site, u can make the one you want, and sub it yourself. see how that does, and if it doesnt win, dont be a whiney little prick on other people's t's.
