I think it would be cool to have a facebook loves threadless competition. I would think it should return some hilarious prints :-)
If not, could someone make a shirt satirizing the everyday facebook experience? How does threadless choose which "loves" competition to start?

I use facebook as a way to communicate but honnestly, if wasnt for the fact that the majority of my friends live in canada I'd be off the site in a heart beat I dont like their privacy policy, which states that anything you upload to facebook they own, effectivly your releasing the copyright to them.

Is that true, stubs, they own EVERYTHING you upload? meaning if you put a photo up of yourself, they have the rights to use it however? Brutal.

Eff those internet social networks.

This is from their terms and conditions:

"By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose, commercial, advertising, or otherwise, on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing"

yup, so effectively its saying that anything you upload they have the right to use for whatever purpose they desire and have the right to sublisence it to third party companies.

You only get your rights back when you delete your content from their site.

WHY, lordog?
At least delete myspace. It's a plague to the internet. Facebook will soon become one, too.
stubby43

Actually all the evidence suggests that were in another internet bubble, social networking sites are being sold to advertisers as a great platform to put up adds but actual returns have been very low. Whilst the usage of facebook and myspace have grown by around 500% actual advertising revenue is at about 13% myspace has more scaleability because of its use of video but a big part of facebooks appeal was that it was advertising free.

If they dont start increasing earnings the big companies are going to drop them in a heartbeat, for a very similar reason I cant really see youtube lasting (it costs several million dollars a day to keep running but still isnt a profitable company).

Well the only reason I am on either is to keep in touch with people I don't see often. Tons of my Canadian family (well, we're all Canadian, but I mean those who actually LIVE in Canada) are on Facebook, and a bunch of other people I rarely see are on Myspace. I really do hate both sites, but I can't bring myself to delete them, hence my self-loathing.

That's a piss poor excuse. You can email back & forth. Web cam conference. Phone calls. Postcards. There are others ways to keep in touch.

lordog on May 05 '08 at 5:43pm
Haha, I agree completely! However, the people I'm trying to keep in touch with use these sites as their method of keeping in touch with everyone. Forcing them to try something else is impossible, or at least extremely difficult. So instead of being the whiny bitch in the group, I just go with the flow. The accounts just sit there, until I get an email saying someone posted to my profile or something. And both profiles are marked as private, so only friends can see.

That's it, the lazy use myspace. The lazy creative types feel forced to use it as their portfolios so lazy executives can type in a keyword in once myspace search engine to look shit up. It's despicable, really. Myspace is killing web design. Myspace is creating social retards with kids. Myspace is just gross.

Mezo, I actually disagree with you. I think sites like myspace and youtube are extremely important tools for anone in the creative industries because they help an individuals work go viral.

If you learn how to use all the tools the internet (thanks to open source culture) its possible to create an internet buzz around you, for someone like me who's going to start a new media company these sites provide amazing opertunities, if we can build up interest in our product we can send people to our website which means we earn money through advertising.

Sorry I'm really tired and my thoughts arent fully formed but I'm writing my dissertation on viral marketing, the internet and new media companies so I'm extremely excited about this subject matter (my digg site is a huge link list of articles all about the subject area).

If you use the tools of the internet- you can build your own website with your own name and not depend on a shit party like myspace.

Oh good god, I'm super lazy for sure. And what's worse is that a lot of the time, I don't even message or comment the person back, so it's pretty useless that I even have a profile on either site. So sad.

And yet I can't bring myself to delete them. This is obviously the work of the devil.

I wasnt really clear what I'm saying is:

Its important to have your own website, if you dont the people that have seen your viral video (to take the film example) have no where to go to see more stuff.

It also means that you dont make money if its on somebody elses site (where as if people watch it on yours you get the money).

But you have to put your free content out on viral sites like youtube to generate an audience which you entice to your own site by providing extra content and higher quality videos and importantly you build up a reputation of producing high quality videos people want to see.

My arguement is based on the idea that the biggest problem for creative types is a lack of visability, its extremely easy to get lost in the internet but if your willing to give up some control (e.g on a creative commons license) you'll build a bigger audience.

Myspace and youtube are needed evils.

Oh and myspaces dont have to be ugly, its just a different challenge for webdesigners:

And when i say myspace is killing webdesign, what i mean is that instead of going out and getting a web designer to help you design a decent workable site, people instead choose to instead do it on their own via myspace because it's FREE.

It's like when a client decides they're gonna go ahead and design their own logo because they have MS Paint. That's why we still see Comic Sans, Papyrus, and the like in logos!

AND NOW WE SEE THESE SAME FONTS ON MYSPACE "WEB" PAGES.

Devil.

Well whatever your entitled to your oppinion and its not my area of expertise (web design) if it was I wouldnt be in need of hiring someone to build a site for us.

But for web TV companies sites like youtube are proving to be extremely lucrative, collegehumour.com has reached a point where its adds comand $100,000 I'm still studying buisness's like this but their buisness plan seems to work on the principal I described before.
