about Gay Pride
I think this design is brilliant and I am very glad it was printed.

If it had been printed on purple for girls, I would have bought this thing like a shot.

But... I really don't like pink. At all.

I know, I got over the pink on Understanding Birdsong and I ordered it... but I'm now expecting to never wear it and end up sending it back, because damn, pink, what was I thinking?

*frown*

Don't buy and move on? Buy? Buy and dye? Buy and stick the design onto another colour?

like a shot? never heard that one before.

and you say "printed on purple for girls" as if pink isn't a traditionally girly color.

You haven't? That's odd, it's a common phrase.

Aside from my personal dislike for pink, surely if it's a shirt that's about being queer, it makes less sense for it to be printed on the most stereotypically girly colour ever. Pink being girly/camp works great for the guys' shirt, but less well for the girls' shirt.

Just buy the lads tee instead.

i suppose blue would've been the girls choice then?

Leonard - they're the same colour... haha

the symbol for "gay" support

probably why this shirt won't come in any other color
Leonard Lau
Leonard Lau on Jun 19 '07 at 12:38pm
I'm sure the blokes tee is a slightly different shade of pink.

Haha, Leonard, I feel you are missing the point. :P

Phones, I briefly thought blue until I realised that then it might undermine the gay aspect of the tee and make it look like a load of macho straight lions hanging out talking about the hot lionesses or something... while purple still has kinda queer connotations without being as stereotypically girly a colour as pink.
13strong
13strong on Jun 19 '07 at 12:39pm
why is gay in quotation marks?
13strong
13strong on Jun 19 '07 at 12:40pm
I think pink for both is the best idea, and it's just a pity that it don't suit you Vinde. Maybe you could do your own version of the lions and put it on something that suits you better?
chelly
chelly on Jun 19 '07 at 12:41pm
because i would say homosexual, but the design is playing on the word gay
chelly
chelly on Jun 19 '07 at 12:44pm
vinde, is the pink triangle a common thing where you live? sorry i can't remember where that is exactly, but i do remember you aren't in usa.
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 19 '07 at 12:46pm
I realise that my above stuff about purple is mostly just rationalisation of my pink-hatred. :p But I still think the purple argument makes sense...

Hah, make my own version and get slammed for it?
Leonard Lau
Leonard Lau on Jun 19 '07 at 12:48pm
Vindemiatrix, order the tee and once you get it - dye it.
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 19 '07 at 12:50pm
England. I do know of the pink triangle, but that might be more due to studying Nazi Germany than it's ubiquity as a modern-day gay pride symbol... the rainbow is a lot more prevalent. Though I have seen things like the Union Flag in different shades of pink. I know that pink is kind of the 'official' colour of homosexuality, but I still think purple would be just as good for girls because pink is all with the stereotypical gender roles thing, while does purple is seen by some as kind of a queer colour too... it's the colour of the bi symbol (pink and blue mixed, heh) and stuff. Which I know is less relevant for a gay tee, but still. I just don't want to wear pink. :(

Leo, d'you think that would work? Anyone got experience with dying Threadless shirts?
Leonard Lau
Leonard Lau on Jun 19 '07 at 12:54pm
My friend got the Take Me To Tokyo tee (pink) and successfully dyed it as far as I am concerned.
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 19 '07 at 12:54pm
What colour did he dye it? Did it affect the print at all?
chelly
chelly on Jun 19 '07 at 12:55pm
oh! that's a good idea actually. if you get the right color of blue dye, you could really have a good time w/ that!
Leonard Lau
Leonard Lau on Jun 19 '07 at 12:58pm
She actually.

It was a light purple / lavender colour. The print came out a bit faddy-ish but after a few washes, it looked perfectly fine. Should I ask her how she did it or any further information for you?
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 19 '07 at 12:59pm
Faddy-ish?

And sure, extra info (like brand of dye, how long it spent in the washing machine, etc) would be awesome. :)

If you want this to be a weird grey/purple colour, just hot wash it with a pair of blue jeans. I have proof that it works.

Sounds good to me! ;)

So, uh, if you don't want the grey/purple one any more... :p

LOL I'm a-gonna try and colour it pink again. Somehow. Maybe wash it with a red sock or something.

I've ruined about 6 tshirts so far with my 'fixing'... including The Bad Seed, which is sold out and unlikely to be reprinted. My Swiss Army and Revenge of the Sushi look faded and dull, and my Adorable Disaster... is a disaster. I should stop trying to make them fit with that bloody hotwash.
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 28 '07 at 6:21pm
The Bad Seed definitely won't be reprinted because it's a Select.

And yes, never wash Threadless shirts on hot!
Krakaboom
   Krakaboom on Jun 28 '07 at 6:55pm
Well... if they don't fit I don't wear them anyway. So I guess it's a toss up between having a t-shirt that's nice and bright and colourful (but looks like a baggy condom) and having a faded, slightly wrong-coloured one (that I can actually go out in).

The fit for this new batch is appalling.

Vindemiatrix on Jun 28 '07 at 6:57pm
Hmm. Is the next size down too small or something?
Krakaboom
   Krakaboom on Jun 28 '07 at 7:00pm
I um, already buy small.

-sigh-
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 28 '07 at 7:01pm
Girly L or XL? The fabric's nicer anyway, and it's not girl-shaped in the slightest. :P
Krakaboom
   Krakaboom on Jun 28 '07 at 7:06pm
Is that true? I do like AA, but girl's tees... I dunno, don't they have shorter, higher sleeves and a more 'hourglass' shape?
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 28 '07 at 7:08pm
True about the sleeves being shorter, but trust me, the shape? It's a fucking tube. Doesn't curve in at the waist at ALL.
Krakaboom
   Krakaboom on Jun 28 '07 at 7:12pm
I'll go check out a girly top. I believe they have an AA store here in London. But I don't really like short sleeves.

I'm gonna go buy some pink/red dye tomorrow to further mangle my lion tee.

And I've just bought Tree Town and Reach For The Stars (last one!). Wish me luck.

Vindemiatrix on Jun 29 '07 at 1:33am
Whoops, looks like my reply to you didn't get through last night.

You might want to look into trying the kids' shirts (custom cut, NOT AA) in size 12 or 10. The fabric is lovely - soft, thick, and stretchy - and the sleeves are quite long. However, the sleeves are higher and slimmer than the girly ones, and the shirts are shorter.

Good luck!

(Also, wow, I didn't know AA actually had shops over here. o_O)

Bought a pack of Dylon pink, washed my lion tee and as an afterthought, threw in a white shirt that I never wear. Well - the shirt's come out a FANTASTIC shade of pink while the lion tee has not changed one bit. Still an ugly greyish/purple.

Ya gotta laff.
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 29 '07 at 10:44am
Hmmm. Cut out the lions and appliqué them onto the fabulous new pink one!
Krakaboom
   Krakaboom on Jun 29 '07 at 10:54am
It's already called GAY PRIDE. If I did some appliqué on it... well, I think that would be overkill.
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 29 '07 at 10:56am
Oh pssht, it's the best way to get the design onto a colour you like! Besides, how do all those hardcore kids get fabric badges onto things if not by appliqué? It's not as though punk band logos or army stripes appear by themselves!
Krakaboom
   Krakaboom on Jun 29 '07 at 10:58am
I think I've already done enough damage. I'll just wear it as it is -sigh-
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 29 '07 at 11:00am
Would it be less gay if you got a girl to do it for you? :P
Krakaboom
   Krakaboom on Jun 29 '07 at 11:04am
Lol I'm not worried about THAT, actually. Just that any further attempts to 'fix' inevitably results in further disaster.

For me anyway.
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 29 '07 at 11:08am
Aw, that's a defeatist attitude! :(

But... if it's currently sucky, what can you really do to make it worse?
Krakaboom
   Krakaboom on Jun 29 '07 at 11:10am
i could render it completely unwearable! At the moment, it's just in a weird colour. But it's not totally revolting.
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 29 '07 at 11:31am
Well, if you're happy with it then that's cool. :)
