thats a torii gate from the shinto religion

although buddhism and shintoism mixed in feudal japan the torii gates were never used to mark buddhist rock gardens, they were used for the spiritual entrance into a sacred place in nature

And yeah, it does make sense.
Someone got frustrated with it, broke the sand rake. Then they walked off and you can see their footprints.
So yes, it does make sense.

That's not the part they're questioning. I'm pretty sure they get that concept. The OP is questioning why the gate is there when it appears to be a historical inaccuracy. Don't patronise them.

Interesting stuff...

More importantly though, why isn't that pirate cactus on a t shirt?

Or is he already?

I'd buy him.

perhaps the gates are leading to a sacred place adjacent to the rock garden? HMMMMMMMM? never thought of that did you?
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on May 30 '07 at 5:58pm
Because Cactus Pirate is a person. You can't put a person on a shirt. Unless of course we made shirts out of his flesh...hmm...

Yeah, we don't have to get too picky over details that will most likely be lost because nobody stares at someone's chest for that long.

Unless you're a perv.

Come on, it's easy, you can make anything work if you want, especially if you don't want to be the nay-saying pud on the message board.
"Zen makes me angry, I got rocks in me knickers, I'm outta here, I'm checking out this Shinto party they got next door."
Yeah?

Geez people, way to overreact. thatmaybeAWESOME was just pointing out that he noticed the design wasn't completely correct... that's no reason to start name calling.

Interesting observation. I think the people who like it will still like it though.

MAYBE that little inaccuracy is what made the garden tender so very angry that he broke his rake. Now it all makes PERFECT sense.

what confuses me is that the image looks like it is smiling

Japan, among others; so thinking Japan, the artist included the gate with the garden, not hard to see how easily the mistake could have unknowingly been made.) I didn't know either, but now I do. ^__^b

hmmm, got cut off o.O
wow, it *does* look like it's smiling...
There are historical inaccuracies everywhere, especially on t-shirts. People associate certain imagery with certain things, even if it isn't necessarily correct, hence we have stereotypes.

thatmaybeAWESOME was just pointing that out. (Torii gate - Shinto - Japan; Zen garden - Buddhism - Japan, among others; so thinking Japan, the artist included the gate with the garden, not hard to see how easily the mistake could have unknowingly been made.) I didn't know either, but now I do. ^__^b

Actually, if you go to Osaka Castle, there are many Torii gates sprinkled throughout the grounds. One of which is just outside a boring little rock garden that is also quite serene.

THANK you. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who had that reaction to this shirt.

And while there might be a few isolated instances of Zen rock gardens being marked by torii gates, the majority of them wouldn't be.

Uh, Jesus was Jewish, so that's not really an inconsistancy. Unless the tradition of wearing yarmulkes wasn't around then. In which case, you could pick any random person from ca. 30 AD and apply the same thing.

Wow. That was geeky and unnecessary nitpicking on my part.

There are trees and pretty mountains over on the other side. Couldn't the gate be marking that area? And there just happens to be a zen garden on the other side?

As a Japanese Studies major, I underwhere where the OP's frustrations are coming from, but in all honesty, just like everyone else says, it's just a shirt.
