I'm coming to think some people have issues with other people doing great work.
I was just recently on the Critique side of things and saw this one great piece. It may have needed some work or some more variations, but this person had 3 "do not submit this" posts. I couldn't believe my eyes. I'm a professional artist/designer with reputable education from the top art & design school in Canada, and I know what I'm talking about when I see great work.
I'm coming to think that a lot of people on here are really bitter at some of the talent on here, or just bitter and clicker happy. Unless the artwork was copied directly from something and the artwork isn't of the artist...then I can see why they shouldn't be submitting something. But really ...look around. People are being told to submit work that my 8 month old niece can draw and she's not even crawling yet.
Let's all play fair and be constructive people!
If I were back in Art School again and a fellow student said some of the things people on here have said...well, I'd be knuckle painting so to speak. Learn to give constructive criticism and when you see great work, don't be bitter. Be happy that there's great artists & designers out there tryin' they're butts off to get work and make a living at something that they love. And if its not great work, let's all help to make it better!

there are some good designs that are just so far from original or look too closely to something already printed here that might get voted w/ a "do not submit"

other than that, you've just come to the understanding of how some ppl vote on the real subs

you also have to take into consideration concept... someone could do an amazing illustration of a duck with 3 legs... would I like to see a duck with 3 legs? sure would. But would I wear a shirt with a duck with 3 legs on it? Probably not... unless I started dating a 3 legged duck and wanted to impress its parents

i guess there really isnt much of a problem, considering they did end up submitting it and getting a 2.53

I'm not saying the subject matter should be challenged. If the 3 legged duck looks great...cool...if the Liger drawing is loose and all over the place...cool. But if there's obvious talent...let him know it..and for god sakes have a reason why he or she shouldn't submit! Unless he or she slept with your mom or dad while you were downstairs watching Letterman.

well, its not amazing, and its not original, so it would only work for the contest it was originally intended for...otherwise threadless cant print it, due to copyright

See i didn't know that it's been done/a copyright issue. haha but it has reminded me about some of the artwork on here and how people won't recognize great work.
That is all.

something you have to take into consideration as far as critiquing goes, is the total MASS OF SUBS that pass through this site on a daily basis and exactly how much time it would take to give that attention to every sub especially if you don't think it is worth even putting more effort into it....and then take that time by every single day for two years.

i'm not saying that we couldn't be more helpful, but i think that sometimes it just isn't possible. PLUS, most artists only want to hear from printed designers.

i think you should just lead by example.

I will lead! First on the agenda, team jerseys! Home and Away!
But honestly, I don't think every great piece on here should be commented on, but let's all just be realistic. C'est tout!

oh jean, you flatter.

i hear ya ainsy2. i'm not trying to shoot you down. i just think you have to remember that EVERYONE is welcome to a membership here and that means that the number of artists to regular-joes is leaning more toward the second.

Hmm, I think some people are using the "don't submit" button differently from me. I use it to mean "this is worse than a zero, and Threadless is probably going to reject it anyhow." Anything that shows minimal competency is going to get a "needs work." If I don't have time to say why, I don't vote at all (unless several people have already said what I would say, then I throw my vote in.)

So yeah, that didn't deserve "don't submit" replies.
