I wore it for the first time today and on two separate occasions, people have asked if this shirt was some band's shirt.

"Everyone" = two people, apparently.

Maybe because it's colored black and has ribs which obviously signify DEATH AND PSEUDO-EMO BANDS YEAH.

Well, they both have ribcages, but they're pretty dissimilar other than that.

I went to a White Stripes concert this summer and the tee was a rib cage with a red heart inside made out of buttons. But you could only tell it was composed of buttons when you got close to it. I've seen those around and first thought they were threadless tees.
