Crete

Has anybody ever been there? Which village/hotel would you recommend? I go to a conference in September and plan to stay a little longer, but don't know yet where..

I went a few years ago and it was lovely. I think you just need to avoid the east side of the island (especially Malia). We stayed in a pretty but quiet village on the North side of the island, which was beautiful.

We went to Rethymno (sp?) on a boat trip for a day and it was very nice to look around, as was Knossos - which is supposedly the place where Daedalus kept the minotaur!

I don't think it was Daedalus' Minotaur. He was a prisoner there with his son, Icarus.

And yeah - Crete is cool

The conference is of course on the east side :(

I was thinking of going to Agia Pelagia which is a small village close to Iraklio.. do you remember the name of the village you stayed?

I think it was called Bali - it's just a bit further West than the village you mentioned. I'm sure the East side won't be bad- it's just Malia has a bit of a reputation as a sort of 18-30's tacky kind of place for Brits.

The village you mentioned looks lovely if google is anything to go by!
