I will get a new computer at work and I have to decide between Mac and Linux. I used Linux until now and I think it's very easy to use and you can still do a lot of stuff by yourself if you know how.. But my computer is shit, so I will get a new one.. Lots of people here use Mac and so I maybe should get a Mac, but I don't know anything about them.. and I think they are mainly pretty and that's it..

Help me decide!!

ok, maybe that is the wrong blog to ask, because I guess there are not that many Linux users here anyway..

I don't really know much about either. But is it easy to get the software you need for both systems? And are things compatible between them so you can share work with all the people on macs? If it is, you should probably stick with what you know.

software for linux is normally easier to get and mostly free, but it's a little harder to install. Yes, i think most things are compatible..

and good choise tracerbullet.. I would recommend you to choose Suse, as a former windows user it is extremely easy to learn

i was actually planning on giving Ubuntu a go (i've played around with the live cd before). are there any advantages to Suse?

Well, I prefer Suse, but that is maybe because i am lazy. Suse is easier to use, you have to know less about the system and a lot of stuff can be done graphically. I think it's easier if you just start, but if you like Ubuntu go for that. I tried it and I got annoyed. I got the impression that Ubunut is more for former Mac users and Suse more for former Windows users.

I guess I stay with Suse, there are enough people around here that use it

I have a mate who is a linux sysadmin who recently started using macs, I shall ask for some informed feedback but if I get nothing more informative than "linux rocks my socks" I'm not willing to be held accountable (my friend may be a bit of a zealot when it comes to linux).
