Yeah. Does anyone remember where on the site Threadless is referred to as a design "contest" and whether it still is referred to as a contest? It seems like a contest has winners, but maybe they've had to stop calling it that and so designs just get "chosen".

I was looking at the FAQs but could not find it.. maybe I was looking at the wrong place

They are still referring to it as a contest in the FAQ:

"Who designs the Threadless product?
You do!

Threadless.com is an on-going tee shirt design competition, anyone can submit their design and if it gets a high enough score and is chosen by the Threadless crew it will be printed and sold from the site.

Most of the product found on Threadless is a result of the competition. A few of the shirts were printed outside of the contest, some of which were comissioned by Threadless to various well-known designers."

I thin Geewally said it best when he compared it to saying "And the Oscar goes to ..." instead of "The winner is ..."

It makes the losers feel better.
