Like.... you charge it with electricity and it will stiffen or curl or something. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm trying to find more info about it but I have no idea what queries to search for.

EDIT: muscle wire

I want to make a bunch of flowers that open and close (using the curling fabric). Then I want to attach a ton of them to a dress. I would have different sections of flowers react to different pitches of sound so when there's music it's like an orchestra of flowers on a dress. I thought that would be cool. What do you guys think?

I bet they call them "smart fabrics". That's the buzzword right now.

ahahha well I got
http://web.media.mit.edu/~rehmi/fabric/
Which is close to what I want.

That may well be. My friend told me they were working on it at the Media Lab, but maybe he was thinking of batman.

Well, I know of materials that react like that. One of my friends is working on a research pannel for using special plastics that move (curl/contract etc.) when a current is applied to them.

It isn't really a cloth.

it hasn't been uncommon for technology to develop from science fiction/christian bale movies in the past, so who knows.

I don't know about the stiffening thing but I do think an electrokinetic fabric exists somewhere, and I will find it and make my garden orchestra dress and save the world!!!!!!

this blog reminded me of BMW concept car, even though this is more just a regular fabric

they have those wires that contract when exposed to a current

I made several butterflies with some of that stuff.

Lucretia Mott
Lucretia Mott on Oct 16 '09 at 7:45pm
Ah they probably make the top half of the fabric with those kind of wires. What are they called?
Lucretia Mott
Lucretia Mott on Oct 16 '09 at 7:46pm
[or maybe I just made up the fabric]
Either way, I could make the flowers with those wires in them.

yeah batmans cape is a fabric that stiffens when charged. i figured it was pure science fiction. how about some of that crazy magnetic polymer shit that forms semi solid spikes and crap? that any use to you? it looks fun.

I came along that same thing last year online when I was researching kinetic sculpture artists opi. Here is a more interesting presentation:

Apparently that crab-thing above weighs several tons, and can be moved by 1 person. His inventions may one day replace wheels (they are way more efficent)

Answering my own questions: it's called muscle wire, and it's totally usable in clothing:

pretty sweet. And it has boobs in it, so that is a plus!
Lucretia Mott

hi!!

I'm getting ridiculously excited about this. I'm imaging like, a bunch of large flowers at the bottom then some medium sized ones and then smaller ones trickling up to the bodice, which would be a wrappy sort of thing over one boob, and then a huge flower with a bunch of little ones over the other. The drawings look way cooler and make more sense than that. I will post them.

Krimson on Oct 16 '09 at 10:08pm
Cool, although I imagine this wire can't be cheap, and that logistically it is going to be difficult (figuring out the correct paths, currents, and timing, and there might be programming inolved?)

I hope it comes together, it will be amazing.
Lucretia Mott
Lucretia Mott on Oct 16 '09 at 10:12pm
The best part is the programming on this is fairly trivial.... the hard part is learning how to sew a dress and making a billion of those flowers. And I can do it on a leafboard [hahaha sorry for plugging my company, but that's why I was thinking about this project in the first place]!

the little squiggle things are flowers.

oops:

Krimson, the kind of neat thing is [okay, really neat], since this is a demo for our product, all of the expenses are... well expenses. Meaning I don't have to pay to make crazy shit like flower orchestra dresses.

Krimson
Krimson on Oct 16 '09 at 10:15pm
Oh yeah, I forget people don't always pay for their materials out of their own pockets (and aren't as broke as me anyways).

Usually when I start a project my thought process goes like this:

Cool idea - Can I afford it? - nope - next idea!
Lucretia Mott
Lucretia Mott on Oct 16 '09 at 10:30pm
Wait can anyone see those drawings? Am I going crazy?
Lucretia Mott

can't see the pics.

but you know what would be cool? if it was a wedding dress and all the flowers opened while walking down the aisle and they finished when she's reached the altar.

coolest wedding dress ever.

My boyfriend just had the idea for a cool automatically retracting veil... it could scrunch up into all kinds of cool shapes and make a huge and pretty flower in your hair.
sleepyfeet
sleepyfeet on Oct 16 '09 at 11:28pm
that would be eso neat!

and the flower girl could throw down what looks like petals but then they could turn into little flowers.
chelly
chelly on Oct 16 '09 at 11:31pm
that sounds rad. if i had the power to make that dress i'd have the flowers up higher so when ppl were watching they wouldn't have to look down (unless said ppl were very little and then the flowers would be eye level).

anyhow, this idea would be great even as a bouquet. ppl would buy that.
