Why was the shirt printed? It is a horrible design and only scored 2.04! The stock is still full in guys large which is usually a good indicator of how a shirt is doing.

EDIT: I am wondering why this was printed...I don't like it much, it just isn't my thing. For those of you who like it, that is cool, but could you give me an idea of what you do like about it? Super!

a) it's ray fenwick. nothing he does is horrible if you have any sense at all.

b) you hate it because there's no joke and it actually has a message.

c) this is the right answer, it always is on multiple choice tests.

d) threadless prints what they want, and this was a VERY good choice on their part. it's the first shirt since More at 11 that i'll actually purchase. (In guys large no less)

e) all of the above.

pinup-artist on Feb 12 '07 at 1:10pm
yeah i dont like it much either, but everybody knows threadless is 60% popularity and the rest is actual design. although i like the idea of this shirt, i dont like the execution. if someone else did it, it would never be printed. but then again i dont like it because its not my taste, obviously threadless printed it because they know that people will buy it.

If someone else had done it, it wouldn't have been as well designed and you're right, it probably wouldn't have been printed. What an irrelevent argument.

the reason it's not selling guys large as much is because it's only been a week and it is more of a girls shirt.

I mean come on... how sexist do you have to be.
Hawksfan17
Hawksfan17 on Feb 12 '07 at 3:12pm
Lol it isn't selling much in any size....and some shirts from last week have already sold out in certain sizes.

Why does everyone keep talking about jokes? If this was somehow funny I still wouldn't like the design. I am a little sorry that I can't LAFF at it though...

It's visually interesting, and different from the other shirts they usually print. That's what Threadless aims for (and rightly so): a diverse collection of shirts.

i'm buying this sucker up.

opinions on a shirt design are relative. and basing a shirt's aesthetic quality on its score or how well it's selling is like clapping when an "applaud" sign lights up.

i think this is a fantastic design. i've wanted it for quite a while and i had kind of lost hope it would ever be printed. i bought it monday morning, as soon as i saw it was up. and yeah, when threadless prints a lower-scoring design by ray, maybe it's aimed at a niche audience: the sub-community of designers within the larger whole of threadless. what's so wrong with that? there are plenty of other shirts for everyone else to buy.

people keep bringing up jokes cause all of yours are like "lolz cock out!" that shirt fucking sucks. the joke shirts aren't funny without the title. what's the point of that? so that only the people who ask you what's up with your weird shirt are clued in? slash joke shirts are SOOOOO funny the first time you wear them. after that it's like watching a full house re-run.
Hawksfan17
Hawksfan17 on Feb 12 '07 at 5:36pm
Score and how well it is selling are mere backup to my opinion of it. If you are playing the numbers game, then this shirt is low on the totem pole. I think it is a terrible design regardless. For those of you that like it, great, but some of you only like it because Ray Fenwick was the one who designed it.
Skipper6745
   Skipper6745 on Feb 12 '07 at 5:37pm
We don't even know Ray. We like his work because we like how it looks.

And score is never a valid point on the quality of a shirt.
thekevinmcgraw
thekevinmcgraw on Feb 12 '07 at 5:37pm
...of course that's why. because he has a style that sells this. if it were drawn by glennz it wouldn't have anywhere near the style or appeal it does now.

i really do need this shirt. ive been thinking of ways to get it free since ive got 3 shopping carts of clothes saved up on various sites (nicer stuff like button ups jackets and sweaters) and no money to even pay for those yet.

I will check it out, I still don't like this design. I just want to say one last thing on that comment about joke shirts and how they aren't funny without the title and how people have to come up and ask to get clued in. How is this shirt any different? To me it seems worse, being as the title is actually written on the shirt. Without that no one would have get it.

sonmi
   sonmi on Feb 12 '07 at 6:14pm
i personally think it's better for people who don't like a design to not buy it, without being disrespectful to its artist! unless you actually have more substantial stuff to say about it besides ,"it's horrible".
taintedluvv
taintedluvv on Feb 12 '07 at 6:20pm
^ Stating an opinion isn't being disrespectful, it's being honest. Any artist knows that their design isn't going to be loved by 100% of the people on here.
Petanca
Petanca on Feb 12 '07 at 6:22pm
I love this design, it's good, this is objectively: it's good stuff, even if someone wouldn't wear it.

Anyways, i was wondering though why it tookl so long to Threadless to print, they weren't sure at first? they 2forgot" about it?

Welcome to the game, artists can't be great unless they can take criticism. It is like that anywhere you go and pretty much applies to everything in life. What is Ray going to do, melt away and stop drawing because I don't like this design? I am not even disrespecting him, I don't even know him, I just don't like his work. You want more substantial stuff? Ok I will give you some stuff if you can tell me what you like about it so much? Most likely you just like it as I just don't. I think it is too simple in a bad way, I think that anyone who knows how to use photoshop could have drawn it. There is a message behind it but I don't like the fact that he had to write more, more, more on the design to get it across. I am not really a big fan of shirts that have words on them. I think the art should be enough. I have seen Ray's site now and I don't like any of his shirts really, but his poster work is pretty good. I would like to see him take that same approach when designing shirts.
sonmi
   sonmi on Feb 12 '07 at 6:25pm
i guess i just don't understand people who go out of their way to write a negative blog about a shirt. but that's just me, i guess.
Hawksfan17
Hawksfan17 on Feb 12 '07 at 6:28pm
No difference between people who write positive blogs....I think artists appreciate the negative more then the positive sometimes. It helps them see things from a different perspective and improve other areas of their art.

i have to say though, even though i agree with what you're saying with this:

"artists appreciate the negative more then the positive sometimes. It helps them see things from a different perspective and improve other areas of their art."

you don't seem to follow through with it very well with your inital comment:

"Why was the shirt printed? It is a horrible design"
sonmi
   sonmi on Feb 12 '07 at 6:30pm
i have a feeling no changes will be made based on the opinion of this blog, just knowledge that someone very much dislikes this shirt.
Petanca
Petanca on Feb 12 '07 at 6:32pm
there are many other styles than realism to make a design, detail and naturalistic drawing can be put aside in order to gain expressivity, that is what this design does, and, even if anyone could do it "technicaly", probably not too many people would have achieved such an expressivity level. Words are incredibly well interwoven with the image, so they are a plus here. In short. this is good! can't you see it?, even if you wouldn't buy it!
Hawksfan17
Hawksfan17 on Feb 12 '07 at 6:32pm
KB, don't bring consultant work into this, it isn't the same thing. My point about that was, that I didn't think it was that good of a drawing, that you didn't have to have much talent to do it. Ray has talent, but it seems to be lacking here in my opinion.
Hawksfan17
Hawksfan17 on Feb 12 '07 at 6:33pm
Yes my intial statement was short minded, but it was really just me begging the question and expressing how I felt about the shirt. I didn't expect such a reaction.
