this reminds me so much of I Hate Stripes.

it's pretty much the same concept, not all that revolutionary...

It's a revolutionary use of a new printing process.

well I don't know much about printing process stuff, but I'm sure there's many designs more innovative and "revolutionary" you could do with it. it's just another kinda clever threadless tee to me, nothing that special.

This shirt is hardly clever, it's not original, it certainly is not revolutionary. I would even question how it relates to the Loves theme. *shrug* All it does is play off the success of "Blackbirds Attackin'" from DBH. Sure thats great in a t-shirt sales sense..but it's kind of an injustice to the other designers who slaved over this challenge. Oh well, I'm glad my time wasn't wasted.

I immediately thought of that earlier one when I first saw Squeegee, and in many ways it is the same concept. Both are nicely done though.

It is revolutionary because it shows us how to best use the belt printer. When belt printing was announced, we were flooded with terrible all-over repeated patterns that looked like pyjamas. People couldn't get their heads around how it was supposed to work. People didn't know it could make a really big print. This design, along with funkie fresh's two latest shows us the huge potential in belt printing and this one, unlike funkie's, truly takes advantage of the new water-based inks by sheer necessity of all that ink. It's also a striking us of only one colour.

this was submitted before the blackbirds shirt was printed

This contest has an esteemed panel of judges from every walk of community life: A staff member, a blogger, and a designer. They'll vote on the best of the best and select three deserving designs to be eligible for the Grand Jury Selection. You may only have one entry so make it good.

@squatterjohn: "When belt printing was announced, we were flooded with terrible all-over repeated patterns that looked like pyjamas. People couldn't get their heads around how it was supposed to work. People didn't know it could make a really big print."

they could have just added a section to the new printing features saying, "belt printing can incorporate more than patterns. it can also allow for a really big print." personally, when the contest calls for "High concept, super fresh, visually and mentally stimulating design...Typography, halftones, mixed media, crazy textures, 8-colors, foils, and specialty inks…Forget what sells, forget about making everybody "get it," make it weird and artsy...", i feel that something falling into at least one of those categories would be chosen. this design is none of the above. and that's not just sour grapes—even though i subbed for this contest, there are roughly a bajillion other designs i would have chosen instead of this one. clever? sure. astonishingly big print? sure. revolutionary? no.

rpolic, do you mind linking to a few of the ones you would chose? Not doubting you or anything, I just didn't get a chance to see good ones that weren't picked, due to the massive amounts of submissions, its hard to get through the many "throw as much as you can onto 1 shirt" designs. Perhaps if I saw other, more "worthy" designs, I would feel differently about this winning.

ok, now...my 2 cents for what it's worth...i have the shirt...i like it. i $5'd it.

but it is clever and is an appropriate use of belt printing...but is it revolutionary? perhaps. if only revolutionary for the designer. for any of the other bazillion subbers that (some didn't do anything very well but the ones that did) pushed themselves into areas that they had never attempted before...those design (only a few have been printed) have been dusted. nothing happening with them but taking up a few KB on threadless' servers now.

and that's a shame.

was this deserving of a print? yes. was it deserving of REVOLUTION top dog? no. not to me.

i subbed and hoped mine would be considered but it didn't even score enough "$" to be glanced at. alas, it will never be a winner.

so good job to those that did get printed from REVO...but i agree there are more revolutionary designs out there, this is simple very appropriate for belt and this getting printed.

words......

and ethan was probably thinking "short skirt, long jacket" when he said Cake.

This is a good graphic design. Original or not. It is stylish, edgy & commercial.

As to Love Revolution thing (I'm checkin some of the subs as I'm writing this), this one really nailed the theme. Revolution is about changing, wiping the old for new fresh look.

So hats off to the designer. I'll buy this once my design won :).

this is for Madshadow, from earlier...

this shirt is one of the more innovative shirt designs i have seen ever, let alone in this contest. logistically complicated, but far more creative and "super fresh," in my opinion.

for all its flaws, this shirt was at least trying to be creative and different, even if it needed some tweaking to avoid ripping off Beck's The Information album art directly.

while this one did get printed, it's not listed as a winner of the Revolution contest. it is also a huge print (i don't know if it's huge enough to warrant a belt print, but it's pretty freakin' big), but it actually has more than hugeness going for it. it's a simple, creative, and well-executed design.

this sub starts to drift away from trying to be clever and is simply a piece of art (as i believe the contest called for). it's strange and hard to decipher, but that's the point. there's a great mix of illustration techniques and photo montage, combined with a good color scheme and mixed solid and halftone colors. it's kinda like wearing a Robert Rauschenberg. pretty neat.

and finally, here's another one. i didn't get the chance to vote on it, but it's another one that falls into the "art" category as opposed to the "trying to be clever" category. well-illustrated, fantastic color scheme, and it starts to tell a story, which is three more things than the winning sub had.

i apologize again to Reilly—i'm really not trying to tear the squeegee design apart, i'm just saying as far as the Revolution criteria go, they pretty much weren't met at all with this concept. clever idea, good use of the belt print, but not anything i would ever voluntarily associate with "revolution."

this concludes my longest post ever. enjoy.

the contest seemed really unclear for someone just scanning it. I'm just a voter, so I don't read into each thing, just look over the idea of it, and I didn't pick up at all that it was because of a new printing method. And I don't know if this was submitted for this contest, but the Freeloader on the Yak Express is the cleverest and best use of the belt print process I've seen. I just got it a few weeks ago and I love it :)
