Snow white sketch
Initial sketch done on scrap paper...

Snow White (WIP 2)
My blue pencil mock up of it...thinking about putting a hint of the cottage in the background.

Snow White (WIP #3)
Ink! I'm doing the background as a different layer so I'm inking separately.

Snow White (WIP #4)
Working in Illustrator now - I've Livetraced all my inked layers after scanning them and I'm separating the layers.

Snow White (WIP #5)
Still testing out colors - Need to mock it up on a tee and I'm considering adding an oval shaped frame of thorns/roses...but haven't made up my mind yet. I think it may look better as an illustration with the frame, but worse on the shirt.

Snow White (WIP #6)
As per your excellent comments I am trying to weaken the color a little bit to match Magritte's palette a little more. Still working but thinking this version is an upgrade. You?

Snow White (WIP #7)
As per all your suggestions I'm trying to work up a digital painted version. So far I'm sampling direct from Magritte...the colors will need to be altered but we'll see...

Snow White (WIP #8)
I threw a background in now (roughly for now) - I'm adjusting colors and still have quite a bit to go. I need to put in the background and do the dress and the bird as well. Hopefully darkening the color will help avoid any Disney legalities. I'm going to brighten the red just a tad though...

Snow White (WIP #9)
Still working...

Snow White (WIP #10)
Getting fairly close to being finished. I masked out the layers and colored them in so they were no quite as harsh, I think it's working to emphasize the paintedness of it.
I'm going to mock it up on a tee next (should have done that LONG ago!)

loving the magritte reference.........maybe the apple should be green?........I know that means another colour but it would really kick the disney, 'fine' art ref home

Was it green in the Disney movie Kim? Originally I had thought it was green but changed it to red because of the color thing. If I can spare the color I may change it.

was only green when it was being poisoned. when snow white had it it was red.

sorry my posts are vanishing.....

not green in Disney, but Magritte's is green. Just thinking you should play the cross reference up some more.

Green may not work, but worth a try in terms of your brilliant idea methinks!

I would very much prefer a more Magritte palette, give it a better balance between the 2 intertwining elements. Right now it looks like a shitload of disney with sprinkles of Magritte.
Kim456
Kim456 on Mar 23 '10 at 2:19am
Perhaps if you used the blue for the background to ref the Magritte sky (stealing ideas from againstbound here) and the green apple.............or not, I like the disney feel just think a bit more Magritte could be played with

Opinions anyone?

Hmm, I think its an awesome idea. Though I think it only works if done in the same painterly style/palette of the Magritte one. Looks a bit to Disney to me.

It's an improvement, yes, but push it more in that direction.

Kim456 on Mar 25 '10 at 11:03pm
Much better.... might be worth trying the colours on Snow White with desaturated tones moving towards the grey palette of each to try and get that 'dank' feeling of the Magritte.

Again.....it might not work, but worth a go!

i know that this has the whole disney twist of style... but i'd really love it if it was made like a painting...

the only thing i'm not feeling brian (and i'm talking about me solely) are the halftones. :(

Wow, looks cool!

A Snow White Magritte!-great! Maybe put in some stormy clouds, to give a more sombre tone about the piece?

Definitely needs more contrast...

love that you kept the hard outline so you'll have the right point between disney and classic painterly.

awesome brian. just awesome.

jenraskopf
jenraskopf on Mar 27 '10 at 8:59am
I love it, but I am fairly certain that Disney has copyrighted the outfit. When they did 9 to 5 there is a scene with a Snow White fantasy and they were required to change the colors around to avoid a lawsuit.
jenraskopf
jenraskopf on Mar 27 '10 at 9:12am
:(

Sorry if that's a downer.

For the show I believe they used the same colors, just in a different order.
alvarejo
   alvarejo on Mar 27 '10 at 9:16am
you can change the colors slightly, and yet remain the snow white pallete. There are other distinctive elements thar make your snow white recognizable as such. So don't worry about the colors. Go for it man!
davidfromdallas
   davidfromdallas on Mar 27 '10 at 9:22am

Chengui
   Chengui on Mar 27 '10 at 11:44am
Adding the sky is making it look way better! I may try to make her torso like a dark blue/black to mimic the guy's suit in the painting/avoid copyright? Do you think that would be enough?
huskylohman
huskylohman on Mar 27 '10 at 12:16pm
cool to see and read about the whole process...
Kim456
Kim456 on Mar 27 '10 at 3:59pm
was going to suggest a blue/black for the torso.....also you might have to muddy up the yellow too or it will dominate......maybe more grey with yellow highlights???

Those changes should be enough to get around copyright

Keep the red and white crisp like the tie and shirt in Magritte though.
