here I am asking for your bestee vote for november.
sure - franz joseph hulihee stands in the shadow of many other brilliant designs for November. Sure there is no shot for this odd shirt to actually win. So why not go ahead and vote for it, cause everybody loves an underdog. It is obvious to vote for the REALLY great shirts. Buck the norm and vote with your heart, November Bestee Voting ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() hey y'all I know - holidays upon us, but I would like your attention for just a moment. Maybe you have heard of a Israeli named Gilad Shalit, maybe not. I would like to direct you to do some research on him and his story because my brief little description will not do it justice. But basically, 3 years ago he was kidnapped by Hamas. He was only 19 and for the last 3 years he has been allowed no visitors, no communication, no red cross. Nothing. He has been used as a bargaining tool by the Palestinians. Israel has proposed the release of hundreds of palestinian militants in exchange for GIlads release. It has been a painful back and forth, but this week it may finally come to an end and Gilad may get released. It is incredibly sensitive ordeal and may not happen. I am a supporter of Israel and the Jewish people. I did a fundraiser t-shirt design and a series of illustrations for the family of Gilad and a group called NU (Israeli slang for C"MON). you can see the shirt in this photo. ![]() The news this week is incredibly positive. Please, if you have time , send your prayers and thoughts to the family of Gilad, the leadership and Mr. Shalit himself. THanks Joe
ok duders - I am doing my best here, but I am not knowledgable about filmstocks and filmstuffs
My boy is big into film. He would probably know the answers to my questions but this is for him for christmas so... i kinna ask him. See he has been wanting to get into 16mm and I scored a Bolex Rex setup from an old alaskan film maker - AWESOME right its got all the old faders and motors and lenses and stop motion controls - i totally scored. well - I have everything except film for him - I don't have the first clue except i know I need single perf 16mm on 100' He does stop motion (on 8mm and digital and old cassette recording) so Is there a special film for that? I just don't get the specs - i am out of my element here so - I figured the applications: - medium light color full motion - medium light, full motion black and white - controlled light stop motion full color - controlled light stop motion black and white Also I want to make sure and get film with processing included so probably direct from kodak or fuji
i have been enjoying this great blog with even greater images from old photos and pulp mags - link text
I am gonna post my favorites for you all to ignore and make fun of sounds like a plan! ![]() i think this might be my favorite photo ever about Franz Joseph Hulihee
WOW - that was what I thought when I got the print email. I know it seems really cliche' but this illustration was one of those drawings that I did exclusively for the good times of drawing it. And then to get a congratulatory email from Mimi was insane. I really can't say how awesome it is to get another print I think i will write a quick haiku getting a print It's really really awesome awesome sure, I am the kinda guy who does not even know if that is a haiku - but you get the spirit of it right? I think I will wrap up this "about this design" blog with a little story about the title. See I did not know what to name this guy. Then I thought, hell i bet that beard has a cool name. SO I did some serious research (google) and found out there was this guy named Franz Joseph - he was some kind of emperor of austria or something. killer beard, and all beards like his since were named the franz joseph. ![]() that guy But it was not EXACTLY like the beard in my drawing so I did some more intense research (google) and found the Hulihee. ![]() this is a phoutouhause interpretation of Abraham Lincoln with a hulihee... close Which was not exact but almost, kinda like the franz joseph - so I gave up and mashed the two together and named him Franz Joseph Hulihee - I pretend he is an austrian emperor with deep southern US practicalities Thanks again everybody - voters - staff - muh family - you all rock.
so for my latest submission, I decided to take photos during the illustration for one of those neato process blogs.
as far as process goes, I started by penciling roughly on a 14X17 bristol, i forgot to take pictures till i started inking. but you get the idea. ![]() I inked with pretty small pens cause I wanted it to look like an aerial shot .. not sure how successful I was doing that ![]() more inking ![]() more inking ![]() more inking - its a rhino ![]() and thats almost done there ![]() and here it is all scanned and stuff (you can click for a larger detail view) ![]() final submission colors and placement ![]() some shot on the shirt with color options ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() so yep, a buncha pictures... Huge thanks to matt (ninth wheel ) for the sweet templates and shimala, annie and priscilla for the great model shots about Icarus
Way back when, there was this evil dude named Minos who was also the king of Crete. This evil dude was evil cause he made all sorts of demands on other greek lands - sacrificial demands. Well the Bad king got his hands on a Man-Beast (half man half BULL) and wanted to use him to terrorize and such but he needed a cage that could hold him. So he kidnapped a guy named Daedalus who was a scientific wizard, a builder - like Doc Brown he was makin flux capacitors. The evil king Minos also stole away Daedalus's son Icarus, just to be a jerk. Daedalus built King Minos the Labyrinth, A network of passages and dead ends. Filled with lots of stony corners for the Minotaur to smash peoples heads against. Well Daedalus got into some trouble with the King cause he helped the Kings good daughter Ariadne with some wicked string that she used to help a dude named Theseus kill the Minotaur (don't worry that story is filled with woe too) Daedalus and his son were in trouble and King Minos was probably gonna come down on them with a hellstorm of old Grecian fury. So Daedalus was smart and fashioned an escape plan. He made two sets of mechanical wings. One for himself and the other for his son. Unfortunately he had limited materials and had to use wax to put it all together. Not a big deal, he and his son just needed to fly across some dangerous water on a sunny day. Icarus must have been a bit dense or maybe he just zoned his dad out all the time cause despite being warned he totally flew up high too close to the sun and his wings fell to pieces. Daedalus watched him fall and disappear under the water never to be seen from again. Daedalus managed to get away to mainland Greece. King Minos pursued him but then got trapped in one of Daedalus's best plans... DEADLY HOT BATHWATER - in the end Minos Had to work his tail off in Hades Judging the damned and Daedalus got to kinda live out the rest of his life making stuff. Thanks threadless voters, staff and everybody who buys this shirt. And always remember to pay attention to the instructions. I actually made a process blog back when I drew this shirt up - you can find it here |
I haven't submitted any photos. I guess I don't want free money.
