God I love this band and I'm happy to say that I was a fan of them before they got famous on youtube, the first time I saw them live was before they'd released the treadmills music so they were playing to really small audiences.

Their videos have just gotten better and better as times gone by and their amazing every time I see them live.

The advertising doesn't really bother me, I mean the fact is these guys left their label, set up their own and are doing everything their own way.

Theres no chance they could have pulled off an advert on that scale without a corporate sponsor and you know the record labels must be scared because these guys are showing the artists can cut out the middle man and go straight to the consumer.

The advertising is perfect because without Chevy they couldn't have made this awesome shit and without OK Go Chevy would've missed this advertising opportunity. Everybody wins.

oo that was nice/fun. I've only heard their other singles/videos and I didn't care much for them, but this one I like. Also that looks like tons of fun.

oh so they wanna be fugazi? that's cool

not a fan of their musical style but it sure looked fun.

it's a little ironic though...they shun a label and then take on a corporate sponsor?

I wish I enjoyed their music as much as I enjoy their videos.

I love the new Chevy ads. This one takes the cake, for sure, but the Rob Dyrdek car kickflip is pretty awesome too.

This. It seems like they write their songs to fit their video concepts, rather than the other way around. But damn if those video concepts aren't really really good.

I don't think their trying to shun corporations in the same way as fugazi tried to be as cheap as physically possible whilst still profitable. Its more about control of their music and their marketing.

Ok go has gotten very good at is creating viral videos, the truth is those guys got off to a good start when they signed with EMI but their fan base was collapsing and their ticket sales we're shrinking until they had their first viral hit.

EMI made the incredibly bad decision to ban the embedding of Ok go's music video on other websites in order to earn more money but embedding videos is an incredibly important way of distributing videos and making them go viral.

"the band saw a 90% drop in views when that restriction went into effect. As in, 100,000 views one day, 10,000 views the next."

fast company article

A corporate sponsor like Chevy isnt interested in being a record label, all they care about is creating advertising campaigns that have massive reach and connect with potential customers.

Thats a substantially better deal for the band than being on a major label.

Buisness aside I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of their new stuff, I love seeing them live but I always get excited when they play the old songs, their just a less experimental.

yeah i get it. it's very cool when artists get to make art on their terms. i feel quality usually doesn't suffer. they can easily slide into the realm of being "that chevy band" or some other identity too, which, i guess if it's cool for them good on 'em.

Depends on the band, some of the bands I listened to when I was 16 have produced a lot of shitty albums after they got dropped from the label.

But being the chevy band? I think to an extent they are that already, in the same way they were the treadmill band and the rube goldberg machine band. I dont think its an exaggeration to say that their more known for the videos than their music.

They seem fine with it so good for them.

Back to the video, its only just hit me how much of a technical challenge it must have been to shoot, every single item has to be perfectly positioned because each object represents one note, get the positioning slightly wrong and the song wont sound right.

i don't think there song is supposed to really sound "tight" because, it's not. but it's close enough and our mind fills in the gaps.

there's some pieces where things are playing being played but i couldn't see any item being hit as they drove

I never listen to their music but I have loved all of their videos and they are also super fun live. Similar to others I think their strength lies in tying their sound to visuals...which I don't think is a bad thing.
