I've just been watching Live at the Apollo (British show that features stand up comedies) and
Shappi Khorsandi was on.

Shes hilarious but it made me realise that I'm not really all that familiar with female stand ups, I know its a male dominated scene but still there are a fair few that have made it through so I was wondering who do you guys like?

She's funny, but I didn't get the joke at the end about the bank.

I love Ellen.

Kristen Schaal

Charlyne Yi.
I can't find any standup, but every Conan interview has been the best.

Maria Bamford
I don't have examples of her. It's hard to pick, and not in a "too many to choose from" kind of way.

Woo! I've been watching that too! (Though BBC doesn't allow me to watch their content on YouTube, bastards, so I need to to find other people's uploads of their content.) Anyway, Andi Osho!

I like Ellen too. She makes me laugh with her scaring of her guests

There was this one comedian that would say really dry mundane sentence but then after a tiny delay she'd add a word at the end that would completely change the meaning of the sentence

it was quite funny but I can''t recall her name.
huh.

Thirteendaisies is right, Ellen has always been an amazing comedienne, I still listen to her older comedy shows from HBO from time to time. She's basically a female Jerry Seinfeld with hilarious observational humor, mixed with a bit of Kramer as well, who goes to stranger, out-there places. Her and Bill Cosby are probably my favorite PG-rated comedians.

Fuck the haters, Sarah Silverman's older stand-up before she stopped doing it is pretty fantastic stuff. And I like how she works her comedy routines in with talk-show appearances instead of just standing up there pumping them out at the screen.

I also had pre-radio talk show stand-up from janeane garofalo on there, which is pretty funny and way more light-hearted than her radio personality.

And a bunch more have been listed here already, but recently there seems to be way more funny woman comedians on TV/Movies who don't do stand-up, but seem like they'd be really good at it if they did: Kristen Schaal, Samantha Bee, Jane Lynch, Melissa McCarthy, Kelly Kapoor, Erin Hannon (also from the Office) etc.

Shit Nathan, I think the comedian who did that was Rita Rudner? She was funny as shit and thanks for reminding me to hunt down some of her old comedy specials, haven't heard them since watching them on HBO in my teens.

This also reminds me, Paula Poundstone was pretty amazing.

Kristen Schaal started out with stand-up, Evan. Watch what I posted, some good stuff. I can't find any legit clips other than what's on comedy central's site, but she's fucking brilliant. I thought she was a part of Comedians of Comedy, but I'm assuming you know who they are, so she's probably not.

Its a joke about outsourcing, if you call your bank odds on your going to get put through to a call centre in India.

I will check out all of these, I've seen a bit of Charlyne Yi but it was really only her film Paper Heart but that wasnt really about being funny, it was just strange.

Thanks for explaining the joke. These are great. I've been contemplating trying stand up lately. After watching Mork and Mindy again for the first time since I was a kid, I've kind of been addicted to watching Robin Williams. There's a lot of his stand up on youtube. But as a female it's inspiring to see female comics. I've always been a bit afraid of stand up since you're all by yourself up there. But stand up is probably one of the easiest ways to go out and perform since all you have to do is go find a bar with an open mic night and you'll have yourself an audience. I was going to try it tonight, but I'm sick so I think I'll wait until next week.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Whoopi Goldberg yet. The first five minutes of this is Whoopi.

I didn't even notice the link you had up there Mike, sorry! haha, as expected, Kristen is fucking hilarious on stage with a mic in her hand.

Crap, I used the office chica's office names, haha. Thanks for the corrections!

Thirteen, yeah, Whoopi's stand-up aka characters are pretty amazing, some think she's overrated, but her best characters have totally entranced me and made me laugh/cry within ten five minutes of each emotion taking over me.

Sarah Millican is very 50/50 shes either funny or fails miserably.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest that Shappis jokes are all about her being from Iran, I mean one shes talking about what she knows and two, it isn't really any different than a lot of black comedians who only talk about race and being black.

I think one of the reasons white comedians talk about other stuff is that talking about race is an extremely risky topic that can go horribly wrong even if you have the best intentions.

That makes it just as boring. Only a few people can do that nowadays without sounding like everyone else.

People only talking about one subject (John Pinnette- I'm FAT!, gay comedian- I'm GAY!, Kathy Griffin- I'm the comedic equivalent of The Real Housewives!) are something that I thought was left in the 90's...and black people talking about the difference between white and black people was last hilarious back in the Def Comedy Jam days and when Dave Chapelle talked about it.

I've heard so much about how hilarious Maria Bamford is, but I only have one CD of hers called "Winning" or something like that and it is completely sub-par comedy. Is that just a flukey CD? What stand-up performance should I watch of her's to see if it's just that I don't really dig her humor...
mike bautista
mike bautista on Jan 24 '12 at 12:08pm
She's someone you love or hate. I'm in the first camp. Her material is just really out there. All of the comedians I listed in this blog I consider alternative comedians, and most of them can still strike a chord with a usual audience. But with Charlyne Yi and especially Maria Bamford, there isn't really a punchline as much as an overall performance.
FRICKINAWESOME
   FRICKINAWESOME on Jan 24 '12 at 12:13pm
There's nothing more I enjoy than completely abstract, non-traditional stand-up and humor. I'll listen to the CD again, I remember just being completely underwhelmed by how not-abstract it was, haha. Maybe I was just in a bad mood.

I've actually stopped listening to music in the last two weeks and am on the biggest Patton Oswalt kick of my life. It started with him releasing a new stand-up CD...then i listened to all of his stand-ups performances and am having my second run-through of the audiotape for his brilliant auto-biographical/completely made-up but plausible sounding moments in history "Zombie Spaceship Wasteland." Seriously read/listen to it, such amazing recollections/observations.

I dont actually listen to comedy CD's. I usually listen to Raw Dog on Sirus/XM and they play Maria Bamford all the time. I really just love her voices. They are so varying that I was actually shocked when I first saw her on video (becuase I had heard her on the radio before had) and she looked nothing like what I imagined.

I also cant stand Lisa Lampanelli. She needs to stop.

ahaha, yeah, i'm guessing it was lifted from the live at the Apollo here where non caucasians can gather and laugh at whitey.

i like sarah silverman, i like kate walsh and i like maybe one other girl comedian who i can't think of.

i don't like ellen's fake stream of thought routine.
