Threadless Testing Vending Machines For Those Who Still Don’t Shop Online
It's one of the most popular online t-shirt stores, but just in time for the start of the holiday shopping rush Threadless is testing a small number of vending machines throughout its hometown of Chicago.
The company, known for its hip, pop-culture inspired designs, teamed up with Coinstar to create the automated t-shirt kiosks which also sell hoodies, totes, water bottles and infant onesies. Now installed in four pilot locations including shopping malls and grocery stores, the selection of tees offered at the machines is of course limited, at least compared to the expansive variety available on their site, but customers will still have their choice of sizes ranging from small to extra-large.
For the time being Threadless has no plans to roll out similar kiosks across the country, most likely because they'd need to first have the infrastructure in place to keep them stocked. But they seem like a good way to familiarize people who don't shop online with the brand, even if their designs really only appeal to a market that's already internet savvy. If they're successul, maybe other online stores will also venture into this brave new world of selling their goods, in person, to the consumer. [Chicagoist via Coudal]
I agree with Phil. If I want to hear about what threadless is doing, I should only have to check threadless.com. It seems like these days I have to go to the twitter for them to tell me to check out facebook where they have a link to flickr with a picture of a staff member and there's something new or interesting in the background and I have to go to their livejournal to find out how ross feels about this new thing.
And then I still have to go to gizmodo to figure out what this new thing is.
I do follow 365 but I follow a lot of people on flickr and it limits how many photos you can see from contacts, sometimes threadless doesnt show up, twitter I'll chalk that up to time zones and work).
Just to clarify, I'm not overly upset about it, I think the vending machines cool but steve has a point, putting all the cool stuff you threadless is doing on social networks is fine but it just seems bizzare thats theres absolutely no mention of the project on threadless at all.
I dont want to hunt down whats going on with the company, it should be right there for us, hell I even kind of think us regulars the ones that are on the site every single day should be entitled to a sneak preview before its released to the masses.
i understand what you're saying about wanting to find out everything that's going on here on one site.
i don't feel like "the regulars" are automatically entitled to a sneak preview, though.
Whoa, that's pretty amazing. Threadless is turning america into Japan that sells nearly everything out of vending machines. Can't wait for the live fish snacks to make their way over here too!
I'm pretty sure at this point Threadless has a good dozen new partnerships and alternative ways they will be selling their products (and what kind of products they sell) in the works, which will be coming out at faster and faster rates and we won't even be privy to them until they are launched like this one. I still feel the Threadless community gets some say and sees a lot of these developments first, but I can't even keep up with all the new Atrium partnerships and stores threadless is appearing in now, it's not the thing I really expect for the community to see first any more. That's what the community contests and sales and website developments are still alive and well.
I disagree completely, whats the point in having a threadstaff blog if they dont update it, having a vending machine is pretty big news, as is sponsoring an event that A-list stars like Ashton Kutcher went to.
I really dont think its all that much to ask to have a concise report in one place that I can check out when it suits me, I mean the reason you probably cant keep up is because there doesnt seem to be an obvious process for releasing new info about whats happening with threadless.
How hard is it to release this stuff on a blog like they do with the tumblr, then leak extra's on other sites?
Threadless communicates with the community on so many different platforms its confusing, I mean theres the ustream I always forget about, if we just had one centralised page that links into all of this other stuff it would help a lot.
Why cant they post on the blog that their doing a ustream go check this out?

I do agree with this, that's originally what the Threadless News tab was all about on the blogs, but then it devolved into more of a "we've already told you about sales and contest and etc in numerous places but now we're making it OFFICIAL!" posts.
ps- I think some/many of these concerns will be ironed out or at least handled better when the new website code launches soon. All sections are integrated waaay better and flow in a more logical manner on the system...and since threadless is getting so big, you can kind of tell the new website which parts of Threadless you want it to pay more attention to for you.
haha, yeah, the ambassadors at the last meetup got a little looksie and were asked for their feedback...but the next day at the actual event Brock had a huge presentation about the new site and let everyone look at it and even play around with it a bit. Everything is layed out in such a more user-friendly, logical manner....a ton of the things the ambassadors mentioned as problems in the present website (and we also mentioned a bunch of complaints we noticed frequently being brought up on the blogs in the community) had already been addressed in the new code and presentation.
