In case you've been living under a rock you probably know that the threadstaff unveiled a new program designed to help give the community a new lease on life called the threadless ambassadors, a position where outstanding members of the community will work with the staff to create super awesome projects.

In my previous blog I asked what the Ambassadors were actually doing. It was pointed out that the program was evolving and that in order for it to work we should tell the Ambassadors what we want.

So here are my ideas.

competitions

Bring back the threadlemanss

It was an awesome event because it encouraged people to be creative in other ways and the video was fun to watch (maybe this time you guys could live stream it).

holiday competitions

Some of the best things that have come out of the community have been holiday themed like the Halloween carving competition, or we could make threadless themed christmas tree decorations.

creativity for creativity

e.g drawing exercises, or photography comps that are just fun and there to get us inspired and try something new.

Community

Rewards

Dont get me wrong, the blogger of the year award was something that was needed, theres way more to threadless than just tee shirt designs but we only give that reward out once a year.

what if we could give out smaller prizes for outstanding members of the community on a more regular basis?

There are lots of people that do a great deal for the community, like Nestor who goes to the store every week to give us a sneak peak of the tee shirts, the blogger raiser crew who help raise thousands of dollars to get a few extra members of the community out to the meet up who cant afford it, or the awesome people that have been putting out design tutorials.

The prize doesnt have to be major, something like a gift certificate and maybe a medal (like the alumni one?) but I think its important to recognize those people who work hard to help the community.

Community gallery shows

There are a lot of talented people on the threadless blogs, artists, sculptures and photographers and threadless has its own gallery over in the threadless store, why not let the community submit work that could be put together into a gallery show?

It could happen fairly regularly and we could have themes.

And for us film makers we could submit short films and have a screening.

More staff involvement in projects such as the blogger raiser

My thoughts on this one are far less formed, its a bit random and more like a train of thought.

The blogger raiser team are amazing but it always seems like an uphill battle for them to get the funds they need to get people to the event.

First off I think the staff need to talk about it in the newsletter, on teevee and the staff blog, the more people that hear about it the more money they'll raise.

But the big thing is couldnt threadless donate like $500 or so to the cause? I know it sounds like a lot to ask but threadless has had competitions where the prize is a flight before could you guys do the same for the bloggeraiser? (people to have to write an application in order to win)

design/collaborations

holiday comps

Please can you tell us how far in advance a design needs to be submitted in order for it to get printed in time for a holiday, e.g Halloween, Christmas and so on, I know people have tried to do those designs before but have completely missed the deadline to be in with a realistic chance.

collabs

On a similar note I love the massive community collabs where each person submits a small design element that gets combined into a massive design, its the only reason I can legitimately claim I'm a printed designer.

I'd love to see more of these and I think holidays might be a good way to encourage them.

Funding/grant

I decided to give this its own category rather than putting it in website because its a fairly big idea

One of the things I'd really love to see is an artistic grant to help people with their creative projects that people could apply for, I'd also really love for the community to have some extra funds to do awesome things (I know vague).

Its too much to ask threadless to give out a large amount of their own money but I was wondering if an extra feature could be added to the shopping cart?

Basically what would happen when you got to the check out would be you'd be asked to add on an extra

10 cent
20 cent
50 cent
or a $1

to your purchase, that money would be collected together and be used in a way that the community deems suitable/given out as a grant.

Projects and ideas could be put up for voting and the winning ones get part of the funding.

Were only asking for small amounts of money from individual shoppers but it would mount up given the amount of people who buy from threadless regularly and it would be completely optional.

general/website

ambassador emails.

The ambassadors need individual email address'es, it makes more sense to get in touch with the appropriate ambassador rather than a general email address.

ambassador profiles

I realise this is still being worked out but it would be really helpful if we knew what exactly each ambassador had been recruited to do.

more integration between causes and the main site

Threadless causes is an amazing way that we can do what we do best (design) and help the world but its tucked away in a little corner, hidden underneath a series of boxes.

Take it out of hiding and have a button on up top like we used to do when the sites were split into type tees, twitter tee's and so on, right now you have to go search for it and its a pain.

Phew, that blog ended up being way longer than I intended, so those are my ideas, feel free to tell me I'm wrong and go a head and submit your own but...

I dont really see the point... threadless should just hire someone and put them in charge of taking care of the blog/community stuff.

You are such a slave driver on us already Stubbs! :) Or is this just a giant ploy to show us you'd make a better ambassador than all of us combined?!?!?! :p

Awesome list of possible projects and improvements like
Threadless email addresses, but believe me, all of us are working on individual things both externally and internally for Threadless. I think our roles will make more sense to both the community and to us as well soon as Threadless is still working out what the hell our roles are gonna along with the rest of us. Community collab organization would be a fun things as well...

Good blog! We'll definitely be keeping an eye on it. I can't give any details yet, but trust me when I say we have a LOT on our plate, and there will be a ton of awesome stuff coming up just for the community, including some of the things you've suggested.

That would be Mimi! She's in charge of the Community team, which is her me and Charlie, and we're here to do a lot of the awesome things you guys want.

Xiv, thats fair enough but I kind of just wanted to be helpful, the program is here now so we might as well try and make the most of it.

Evan, dont worry I'm pretty sure your positions safe.

That being said I just thought it would be more productive to get a discussion going about what we actually want out of the community, I'm sure you guys are working on great projects that will really help out but my understanding was that you guys are the point of contact for the community to get idea's put forward to the staff/the voice of the community.

And I was just brainstorming, theres probably more than a fair amount of bad idea's in there, I just wanted to start a conversation.

Some interesting ideas here.

It's nice to hear that there's more focus being put on the community here. Kinda felt like we were being ignored for a while as the focus switched to facebook and promotion and bringing people in. There used to be a homey feeling to this place that got lost in those outside promotions, and I'm sure there's a way to keep both alive.

I always find it difficult to think of ways Threadless could be improved. That's not me brown-nosing, but I was perfectly happy with the way it was when I joined over 5 years ago and sure, whilst a lot of the changes have definitely been good ones and I'm sure any further improvements made will please me, I'm perfectly happy with the way Threadless is now.

The Ambassador thing confused me a bit, and Stevethegreat summed it up better than I ever could:

"Steve The Great on May 09 '11 at 9:36am
I think it's fair to question this whole thing, given that they just sort of came out and said, "hey these people are threadfamous...and...maybe they're gonna do....stuff. Or something. We'll get back to you." I would rather see a more focused directive, what we're going to see these folks do. I"m not super upset by it but I do feel like it kind of stratifies the community a bit more and injects a good bit of cliqueishness into an already cliqueish place."

But until it kicks in a bit and we get some idea of what they'll actually be doing and whether or not it was necessary to give some people that extra status, I'm gonna hold back from suggesting things to them.

"It was pointed out that the program was evolving and that in order for it to work we should tell the Ambassadors what we want.

"It was pointed out that the program was evolving and that in order for it to work we should tell the Ambassadors what we want."

Is that true? That seems kind of odd to me, as if Threadless don't really have a solid plan for the role - if it turns out that the project doesn't work out, or that one of the four decides they don't have time for it anymore, since it's an unpaid position, will their badges be revoked?

What would you like to see the ambassadors doing? I guess it's easy to say 'you are in the role, now do something' but it's a new thing and it's up to the community how this works.

Honestly, thats the main reason why I wrote this blog and as close as Abi is to one of the Ambassadors its not actually coming from the horses mouth.

When it comes down to it, your right the staff havent really out right said what their role is, on the one hand they asked us to send suggestions to the community email address and Ambassadors have said their open to new ideas but on the other hand, even in this blog staff and Ambassadors have out right said they've got a full plate on so they dont actually need new ideas.

I'm sure what their working on is aimed at improving the community but whats the point in creating that position if their not actually interested in listening.

I dont know, I'm having really mixed feelings about the whole thing, on the one hand I want this to work because for all of us the communities important, many of us have been here for 6 years but another part is doubtful but then on the other hand its early days.

Ask not what your ambassadors can do for you, but what you can do for your ambassadors (send Aled cookies).

I think there are some great ideas in here, Phil. Good job!

Actually on another note, some of my idea's dont need the Ambassadors help to get going, we can put on photography comps, design challenges and set up community collabs on our own.

I was thinking about doing a photography comp in the near future if anyone was down for it (also could do with suggestions for themes).

I would like to see more effort be put into a big European meet up.
Sometimes I feel left out because so many people now seem to know each other personally, and the meetup in Chicago is just not an option for me.

Agreed. And somewhere pretty central within Europe should be the venue, like, oh I dunno, Vienna...

A European meet up sounds like an excellent idea, its one of those things we always talk about but it never really seems to happen which is a shame because I really would like to get out of the UK at some point.
