I've been on a bit of a hip hop/rap (to be honest I dont know the titles) kick at the moment and theres a hell of a lot of stuff out there with good beats and witty lyrics but most of the stuff I've found are about how awesome they are/how rich and how many girls want to sleep with them.

Dont get me wrong thats not exactly a bad thing but is there anything out there thats a little bit deeper?

I'm pretty obsessed with Watsky right now especially his song color lines which is basically a debate between him (an upper middle class white kid) vs Catch (a black rapper) discussing wether he should be rapping or not

Catch

All you gotta do is get past the guilt

We ain't living in a house that master built

If you understand that, tell your people what you know

Because one of em got enough money to pay back what you owe

George

Yes, My great grands had land, had slaves

I guess I pressed this record off the bank he made

But I want independance, past the declaration

but one down ass white boy can't pay for reparations

What else should I be listening to because Watsky's basically the only underground person I know and I discovered him thanks to his mega popular youtube video where he raps really fast, my knowledge of rap and hip hop is mainly chart stuff and I want to broaden my horizons.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, any songs in particular?

Also I checked out busdriver's imaginary places, he spoke so fast I could barely keep up even when I google the lyrics.

I like dizzee rascal but he's not particularly clever, and Just Jack is alright but he's not always really rap.

The first track I heard by the Tribe was "Excursions", from Low End Theory. The entire album is pretty fantastic.

I usually dont pay attention to the actual lyrics... for me, the voice whether it be singing/screaming or raping, is just another sound that adds or takes away from the rest of the song.

I am of no help to you with this.

sweet.

I love Dizzee rascal but my fave will always be the ting tings cover, just jack has a couple of really good songs but never really followed him. I do like the fact there both distinctly English we used to have a big problem where our acts would try to sound american and it didnt work.

Kidz in the Hall have some good lyrics. Same goes for Lupe Fiasco.
Not so much positive lyrics all the time, but they do tell some sort of story and some of the lines are witty.

Low End Theory is one of the best albums of life.

Aside from ATCQ, also check out:
- Jurassic 5
- De La Soul
- Blackalicious
- Das Racist
- Drake
- Outkast
- Kid Cudi

Army of The Pharaohs
Jedi Mind Tricks
OuterSpace

They talk about guns/violence/sex/themselves a lot but the rhymes/word usage is fantastic, at least i think so. They also dont rely on a chorus every 10 seconds.

I second Blackalicious.

What do you mean by intelligent lyrics, exactly?
I mean, I know when something isn't intelligent, but what is it that you are looking for that you consider intelligent? Because I consider Gold Digger and 99 Problems pretty intelligent.

I am interpreting intelligent as lyrics that you have to think about to understand.

Anyways, i like this song, a lot.

i find social satire as intelligence...therefore i will alsways listen to deltron 3030...sci fi beats with sci fi lyrics talking about a futuristic world using tons of modern day metaphors.

I think Eminem has the best lyrics of any rapper, did something entirely different with rap in the types of characters he creates, and a vulnerable honesty.

Kid Cudi sometimes, but he's so slick I don't really believe him.

Tyler The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and other OFWGKTA guys have some awesome raps. Definitely intelligent, and doing something different with it, again doing something slightly cruel and brutal and "inappropriate", but it's awesome.
Chipmnk

Tyler, the Creator looks like such a fun dude to chill with.

Another cool thing about Childish Gambino and OFWGKTA is that they put their music out for free.

Yeah, man. Thankfully, they've been breaking out and getting more and more attention, so hopefully they'll get boatloads of money while still offering albums for free.

In a perfect world.

They got a record deal with Sony, but not in the usual way. Sony is giving them their own record label and Odd Future signed themselves, which is pretty fucking awesome.

And Phil, basically every rapper people consider great have intelligent lyrics. While I haven't explored the genre as much as I've wanted, I notice that rap is unlike other genres in that it can appeal to the mainstream without losing interest or intelligence. I think it's great when the public is given music that music snobs consider top quality.

Oh sweet! I didn't even know that.

And good point. Rap seems to be the great equalizer between "indie kids" and the general public.

Clouddead are amazing.. The "Clouddead" called album.

If you want fun and inteligent but french rap you have to listen to "L'atelier" the album is called "Buffet des anciens eleves" . I've been listening to it 1000 times!

Sole on anticon is really good too. The album "selling live water".

Tell me here if you love it! Have a good listening!

Mike my problem is that all the artists I'm talking about, I havent really listened to anything other than the singles, I dont know maybe I'm just lazy but I never really listen to albums anymore.

One of the things I do find interesting though is that there seems to be a sort of perfect blend between indie music and rap, one of my favourite songs is Chiddy Bang - Opposite Of Adults

a remix of mgmt kids, so perfect, it also has some really clever lyrics, like

Rock band show you how the guitar feel
And I could care less how y'all feel

and

And Xaphoon, thank you for the crack
But I play a Ron Burgundy I anchor on the track like that
