stubby43 aka Phil is a 25.42 year old boy, has been a member since December 22, 2006, has scored 3,809 submissions, giving an average score of 2.65, helping 191 designs get printed.
Just how many submissions did it take before you finally got a print?

-------------------------------------
New question:

what is your average number of submissions between each print?

---------------------------------------------

Do you think you dramatically improved from your first submission to the one that actually got you printed?

I've never really submitted anything, I've only ever been a part of collaborations though one did get printed so I guess that kind of counts but not quite, after all it was the work of everyone else involved that made it possible.

Jess4002 Picked my first print :)

i think once you kind of learn what sells... or how a finished design should look it gets pretty easy...

actually i'd subbed 100, but it wasn't my 100th that was picked. I think it was my 92nd or something like that.

I finally got a copy of photoshop so I'm thinking about submitting a design, which is a huge, huge step for me I've been apart of the community for 6 years and never submitted anything.

But I feel like this year is about changing everything.

wow - good work. Can't believe you have been her 6 years and not subbed anything - though there are lots of us who design etc for living so doing this is just a nice creative release from the commercial world

If there was a definitive piece of advice to give it would be "Idea is king" as spoken my our lord Murraymullet

There are a lot of reasons why I haven't but at the end of the day their all excuses, for the most part I was just content voting on designs and being a part of the community.

Also guys, you put an insane amount of effort in, you all deserve your prints.

Randy, thanks for the advice mate though I think at this stage its more important to actually take the first step and make a submission than aiming for a print (not going to lie, it would be nice).

23+

With the exception of two or three designs, I dont submit anything with the intention of it scoring well/being printed. I do it for fun...

My first submissions were incredibly bad. I had just gotten a copy of photoshop and didnt know what the hell i was doing (these subs arent even posted anymore).

Truth, though they do occasionally cause hilarity.

Jason picked my first print(alumni pick)
sub #35
(bonus ~ I found out about it a few days after my birthday, which probably made me even more excited beyond belief!)

my second one was sub #82

who knows when or if more will come? I just do what I love:D

#32. Interesting how it worked out. I drew the main character for it and had noooo idea where I was going with it so I set it aside for like a week or two then came back with some better ideas for it, really took my time with it and sat on it for a day or two before subbing. So I guess my advice would be to take it slow and wait a day or two before you settle on the final product.

Very glad you asked this. I was always curious.
...but now I'm scared to submit anything. :( What if I put tons of work into something and end up with nothing... which is very likely? :(

It's very sad to hear about people creating nearly 100 designs before getting printed. And I don't know if I'm clever enough to be one of the lucky few.

To get printed is really tough - I think there approx 500,0000 submissions a year and probbaly only about 300-400 get printed
( somebody correct me if I am wrong) so you just have to do it for the enjoyment and if something gets printed, then brilliant

20 subs and 2 years before I was printed. My first sub was something anyone here could have come up with, put together and subbed and yes I've definitely improved since then.

Still a long way to go for me it looks like. So, when somehow someday I've reached that stage, I want everybody here, to still be here to see it, and say, "well done son, you deserved it."

300 to 400 is a pretty reasonable guess, I came in at 520 which is generous but accounts for all the special random prints not released on a monday but even then it was assuming threadless was printing 10 new tee's a week.

Dust yourself off and start again, if it doesnt get printed there were reasons why I think everyone here just learned from their mistakes and carried on until they got a hit.

7th, 2 months after I joined. I spend a lot of time looking at winning designs and scoping out what the top designers are doing.

It's super intimidating to see designers like ben chen, naolito, or alexmdc that get 3+ scores every time and are cranking out more subs than anyone else. Obviously this marriage of quality and quantity is bound to get you multiple wins, but for us mere mortals, all it takes is one great idea and a little bit of luck :)

it took me 30 subs to get my first, 30 more to get the second, then it's about one every 5-10 subs.

my 17th sub was an alumni pick it was chosen by the super talented sonmi, which made it doubly awesome.

fun fact I knew it was going to be printed before it had finished scoring.
