I really think this is one of their best songs, "we like sports" and "just two guys" are classics to the point where academic researchers have written about them but in a way this is the complete opposite.
Where as those videos were about being low quality, this revels in its high production value, the video makes the song so much better.
Let's go to the SNL Internet Song Meter for how funny this was to me:
Hi-------- -----------LESS AS GOOD
On A Boat....Lazy Sunday...Jizz In My Pants...Dick In A Box...and then this one.
Jizz In My Pants amazed me how funnier they were getting, this seems like a bit of an easy yet enjoyable step back for them...I didn't even realize it was Jessica Alba as one of the girls until you said something! You're right, the videos are seriously half the fun...nothing wrong with being lyrical and visual at the same time :)
My friend showed me "The Galaxy Olympics" or whatever it was called once which was also also pretty amazing.
I also would prefer they don't have the person they're kinda making fun in their songs...it's kind of a cop-out like, "Yeah, this song is us saying saying T-Pain has little to no talent and that the pop rap lifestyle is all about meaningless shiny things that are a millimeter thin in substance...but look, T-Pain's here and we're just playin' around guys, honestly....let us into your parties."
These might be my favorite hip-hop/house music parodies, De La Soul being super subtle yet amazingly hilarious that house music STILL sounds like this, some twenty years later. PUT IT ON VIBRATE! being the best joke about pagers ever.
Well, these and "Too Many Dicks On The Dancefloor".
See I disagree with you about them involving the person their mocking in the video's, I think its great that these celebrities don't take themselves too seriously and I'd say the humour is more like a roast than out right mocking.
In a way its kind of like the Simpson, in the sense that celebrities are lining up to be in one of these videos, even if it does mean mocking their public image.
I see what you're saying man, I don't think it's like the Simpsons in that the way they poke fun at themselves there is way more clever and they're worked into the story plot lines pretty seamlessly, where The Lonely Island once again got a famous purveyor of that horrible kind of music they are making fun of to just sing a little bit of a hook, it seems more of a "hey, we're famous and popular enough now to get any singer we want for our songs!" kinda feel. If they wanted to be more innovative with their guest stars, they wouldn't have just had them sing a little bit of the hook and background again, but did something new. Although all of them beaming at the camera with the skywriting behind them is hilarious. Like i said, I think this was a fun video/song, but it's nowhere near their high points for me.
haha, I don't always agree with that Aled because of the Kevin Federline joke commercial a while back where he was dreaming he was in a big music video and big career but really was daydreaming on the fry cook line...because his only career option was to make fun of himself at this point.
Oh man, Jizz In My Pants is so impressively funny! How can you not love how more and more ridiculous and fast-paced the joke gets...it's so comedically timed out.
so looking back at this, i still dont love the song. The video is pretty dang good. The chorus is nice, the verses are just kinda lacking until the turtleneck though.
Maybe but I'm not sure what else they could have done, I mean they only have three minutes and it is a song, the simpsons have 20.
Not that I'm suggesting their writing is on that level, just its that same principle.
Anyway i've thought about it some more and whilst I still do love this song, my only criticism is its formulaic.
It follows the exact same rules as on a boat, take a famous singer (preferably of the rap/hiphop whatever de script), make the most literal version of their songs possible and have them sing the hooks.
Not that its a terrible thing, its still a good song and its still very funny but on the other hand they haven't evolved either.
