Ok so the short version is that I might have a really good shot at getting a job in london, it'll be my first real job (its salary) but they've asked me to give them my salary expecetations.

I dont want to price myself out of a job but on the other hand I dont want to go so cheap that I cant afford to live.

I've been looking at flat shares around bethnal green/shoreditch (very quick internet search) and it looks like I'm paying around about £550 a month, council tax (I probably have this completely wrong) at £98.60 in 10 payments, travel was looking at around £200 a month with an oyster card (but that only got me too and from work on a weekday), £150 for food and tolietrys and £200 for whatever else.

Which is about £9445 a year but am I way off?

If that is my total outgoings that means at a minimum I need to earn £15000 a year, is that unreasonable to ask for, should I ask for more?

The company I might be working for is one of the biggest events management/buisness to buisness magazine companies in the UK.

I am totally confused about this, but I want to get the CV off really soon, any help you guys could give me would be a major help.

You should ask for more than that.

I would start by looking at comparable jobs and seeing what they pay, then you can figure out what it is reasonable to ask for.

I'd look for a minimum of £20k

Also be aware that a £15k annual salary will not work out as £15k in your pocket. Taxes, NI and such.

Can you tell us roughly what the job is? It's hard to know what you should be paid without knowing what you would be doing :)

yeah, I used the online tax calculator and it came out as £12,000 ish which means I can live off of it but if anything goes wrong I'm stuck.

As for the actual job, the problem is its a grad scheme and the job isnt specified, other than the obvious which is entry level so I need a ball park figure that I can live off but isnt too expensive.

you don't wanna be living hand to mouth, so ask for at least £18k

I earned 15k in one job in London, paying 380 a month rent and still struggled a bit - if you're paying more rent you definitely want to be earning more than I did.

Thanks for the help guys, so I was thinking of putting a range in of 18k to 20k, or should I aim a little higher, like 18 to 22?

Don't say 18, say like 20-22. If they offer it as their maximum, you can take it. But be really confident in what you're asking for and if they try and knock the wage down just tell them you think it will be difficult to live in london for much less, do your research for jobs in the same field and see what they pay so you can offer them evidence to support your claims.

I'd ask for about £18 - 20 k minimum for a graduate role.

That said I'm a part-time graphic designer living in London and I manage on about £13k. Which is tough going but I do get to pursue my illustration and print-making which is all I really care about.

I get to have a few beers and buy a few records and prints now and again but not much more besides! No holidays for example!
